Why Rotary Four-Way Test Is Important?

Decent Essays
Life is nothing more than a series of never-ending choices. Choices are made every morning, every evening, and in every step we take. Sometimes though, humanity has a tendency to make choices that are detrimental to society for the sake of nothing more than appearance. Appearance is everything. As long as someone looks happy, they have to be. As long as someone appears to be smart, they must be. As long as the pain does not show, it is not there. Why should truth, fairness, or good-will matter when it comes to how the world sees you? That truly is the problem with society. It cares more for how people look on the outside than how people look on the inside. That is why the Rotary Four-Way Test is significant, because it teaches that it is what

According to Maria deSouza, a third-year student at Pembleton, and the President of the students for Equality Everywhere (SEE), “The societal problem is lookism. For decades, people have been willing to talk about racism and sexism, but they’re still reluctant to talk about lookism” (282). Lookism is known as being prejudice against unattractive people. Lookism is something that is not taught, it is naturally acquired and due to society, it is constantly reinforced through many sources such as social media, fashion and television. Our society has become increasingly superficial and materialistic; it is becoming less about who you are and more about what you have.…

There’s no doubt that everywhere you go, you are being judged. By the people around you, the animals, even microscopic organisms judge you (not kidding). For instance, many times I get judged by my own mom about my hair, my shoes, and the fact that I love cheeseburgers since it’s said to cause acne; although, I don’t really care for those statements about how I look, because if you really want to know someone or make good friends, you look past looks, and you judge people by personality. Wouldn’t it be nice if the whole world was like that? That is the truth, the whole truth, the unvanquished truth is how Freak would say it.…

Due to experiences reading these two books, Uglies and Harrison Bergeron, one might infer that there is no hope for society. Humans are getting strict ideas of what “pretty” needs to look like on the inside and out. Society is on a downhill slope and there’s no coming back. Evidence from Harrison Bergeron states, “Hazel had a perfectly average intelligence, which meant she couldn’t think about anything, except in short bursts” (Vonnegut 21). The smartest people in the world can come up with a solution, but the government forces them to wear a hearing handicap.…

Looks aren’t everything People judge others by the way they look rather than their type of personality. A person may completely look normal but might have some flaws that make them different. You wouldn’t know that just by looking at them, you would have to get to know the person to figure out what they are like. Even if we see someone sketchy walking in an ally in the middle of the night, we assume that they are a bad person, because they’re in an alley in the middle of the night doing who knows what, but in reality it’s just a person trying to get home. Looks shouldn’t define who a person is; their personality should define who they are.…

Beauty matters. Well, at least for some. From the clothes you choose to wear (and the ones you don’t) to the items you own, everything surrounding you changes how people perceive you, even things completely out of someone’s control. Pressures to adhere to societal norms can cause long-term harm for certain people, but others can take this concept in stride. Due to different upbringings, along with different environmental influences, it allows for a range of perspectives.…

Does society play a role into feeling unaccepted in today’s culture? Many would say that our country as a whole has gotten better at accepting those who are different than the “normal”, but if this were the case then why do people feel pressured to pass? In the book, Passing When People Can’t Be Who They Are, Brooke Kroeger explained passing as, “Passing involves erasing details or certain aspects of a given life in order to move past perceived, suspected, or actual barriers to achieve desired ends.” (8) As you can see passing means to act as something you believe yourself not to be, like putting on a front. Reasons as to why someone of color would want to pass as a different race, could be issues like; society, white privilege, and safety.…

I have always been taught to judge people based on their actions rather than their appearance, and this was a lesson that was completely reinforced by the house I lived in, in which I grew up. As kids, if any of us even remotely suggested that we were focused on someone 's looks, we were immediately punished and reminded that there is no way to know a person based on what he or she looked like, but rather it is important to know the heart inside the body. Making snap judgments based on appearance was definitely not acceptable in our household. This was difficult for kids, since young people often judge people based on first impressions, which generally involve their physical appearance. Nevertheless, as an adult, it became as clear as day to…
