Literary Techniques In Trials Of Arabella By Briony

One of the most significant scenes in this novel is when Briony goes to her room after reading Robbie’s Scandalous letter that was mistakenly sent to Cecelia Briony’s sister. The letter contained vulgar descriptions of acts that Briony should not have been privy to do to her age. After reading the letter she gets sent to her room by her mother Emily for unrelated reasons and it is there she begins thinking about what she had uncovered. This leads to a misconception about Robbie which creates the whole crux of the novel since it leads her to think Robbie is the culprit that attacked Lola. The beginning of the novel also shows how Briony’s excessive need for writing is a coping mechanism for chaos by bringing order and control to her writings by discussing the play. Briony is also shown to observe the word with an author like lens an example of this is the scene where she reads Robbie’s letter and how she thought about it as a story. Robbie is quite similar to Briony since the Novel states that Robbie has a literature degree which he thinks about when he is contemplating his feeling for Cecilia. He pulls from this when he states that works from his college about the symptom of love did not actually compare to the real thing. Briony has a similar experience when she sees Cecilia strip in front a Robbie before she enters the fountain while Robbie stands there watching which Briony assumes is a wedding proposal and right after Cecilia drowning but she realizes that this experience did not correlate with her reading experience since Robbie did not try to save Cecilia. Back to Robbie contemplating his feeling for Cecilia which he realizes as love after he looks at a book he borrowed from Cecelia which he covets because she touched it. In this scene, Robbie is in his Room thinking about the fountain fiasco where he tried to wrestle a priceless vase from Cecilia because he wanted to help which leads to the vase breaking and each one them trying to one up each other to obtain the broken pieces in the fountain. He then takes a book he borrowed from Cecilia which he promptly smells which smells like an old book. Next, he begins to think about all the books he read in college that explained the symptoms of love. Here he realizes the only reason he likes the book is because Cecelia held it and it is because he loves Cecilia. Then he begins to write an apology for Cecelia then after that he types a scandalous note. After that, he goes to the living room to shine his shoes where he starts talking to his mother where he remembers that his dad left he when he was young and that his mother began working for Cecelia’s parents which lead to Robbie having a close relationship with Cecelia for a long time. Finally, he gives Briony the wrong letter to give to Cecilia a letter that Briony reads which causes Briony to target Robbie which leads to some trouble for Robbie.
