Imagine having toads vote on new laws and reforms that would affect the population. Let that sink in for a moment...Eventually it’s realized that toads don’t understand the needs of humans, they can’t speak English, and they can’t even vote. That is exactly what a horrible form of government is, a place where you aren’t represented or heard and your government doesn’t even take your opinions and needs into account. This is why representative democracy is the best form of government known to man because it leads to well informed decisions, promotes citizens’ basic rights, and is the most progressive. As stated so eloquently in the Preamble to the Constitution and by President Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address, stated, our government exists to be run “of the people, by the people, for the people” (Jefferson 2). The United States’ uses a representative form of democracy, which has served us well as a country for the past 240 years; as the United States is one of the most powerful countries in the world, one of the five main countries for the United Nations, and one of the wealthiest and most diverse country in the world. A representative democracy can be defined as a system of government in which all eligible citizens vote for representatives who share similar viewpoints. These representatives go into Congress and make/reject laws according to the basis of their represented area.
