“Everything you’ve heard about Reconstruction is wrong” (Schuessler). Unfortunately, that is a true statement about Reconstruction because there are some people out there who don’t think it is an important topic in history. Everyone needs to learn about the facts of Reconstruction, and what the significance of Reconstruction is. People need to know the truth about Reconstruction, the failure of it, the Myth of the Lost Cause, and the relationship between the “Confederate Monuments, and the failure of the Reconstruction and the Myth of the Lost Cause. Even though people do not talk about Reconstruction in schools that often, teachers need to conduct more lectures that talk about it.
To start, people have always been burying Reconstruction, …show more content…
According to the presentation on the Myth of the Lost Cause, the definition of the Myth is “a very successful effort by the defeated white southerners to recast the Civil War and Reconstruction in historical terms more favorable to them.” It also deals with the Confederacy, and how 11 states formed the Confederate states (Lecture, 1-24-18 ). The north also raised armies so that they can force the Confederate states back to the union (Lecture, 1-24-18). Americans wanted to share the Myth because after the damages that were caused by the Civil War, they wanted to build the nation up again (Black). The instructor fights against the myth by talking about it in school because the Myth is something that has not been taught for over 100 years (Lecture, 1-24-18). The “Lost Cause Myth” also has a symbol, and that is the flag of battle for Confederacy (Lecture, 1-24-18). Mass media has helped spread the Myth to everyone (Lecture, 1-24-18). The article written by William R. Black, “Untangling the Lost Cause Myth from the American Story Will be Hard” talks about how the Myth was whitewashed to cover up the facts about slavery, and what went on in the Civil War. William R. Black also stated in his article that people used another tactic to defend the Myth, and people spread the words that the Confederates were …show more content…
Some people may think otherwise, but it should be taught in every history class because of its importance. For example, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were all created from Reconstruction (Schiessler). Each of those Amendments are important, and are still used today. Gay men and women used the 14th Amendment to fight for legal rights they have (Foner). William R. Black mentioned that the United States was a nation that allowed slavery for a long time, but that changed. Jennifer Schuessler included a quote from a man who was a high school history teacher, and he stated about Reconstruction “I dont think it’s been poorly understood, I think it’s been intentionally misrepresented.” Even though people do not like to talk about Reconstruction that often, it needs to start becoming an important topic for every American history class. That should start
