The Revolutionary War was about to happen. The British had just put many new taxes on the colonies in order to pay for the war that they were just in and the US was getting sick of it. The Age of Enlightenment was happening because there were many philosophers. People in that time believed that reason was more important that faith (science improved humanity more than religion), and that people were good by nature, not evil. This made writing a public affair, and it was used for a political purpose. An example of political writing was “Common Sense” by Thomas Paine. Benjamin Franklin was an author during this time period, as well as many other occupations. He wrote things like “Poor Richard’s Almanac” and “The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin”. In his autobiography, he wrote about how he strived to be the perfect human being. This is fitting for the Colonial time period because he strived to be the perfect man on paper so people would reason that he was perfect, he did not strive to be the perfect man in church. He believed that he was good by nature, but something was messing it up so he made a chart. On his chart, the things that were keeping him from being purpose were things like order. Order was sinful because it was not perfect and thus keeping him from being the perfect man. The Colonial time period was a very science-based time
