According to the text race is at the center of the achievement gap. The text discusses four ways scholars interrogate race. The four categories listed in the text did not surprise me. It was interesting to note how each category could appear to be historically relegated to public policies at that time. For example, the views of the conservative on race in education seems to be a product of the Jim Crow era, as the ideas in this doctrine are reflective of some of the same similar concepts of many in the American south. The text continues and describes the dangers of colorblindness. One researcher claims that colorblindness is not as it seems, and is more problematic then anything. Colorblindness suggests that one would rather ignore race all together and ignore the power of race in shaping individuals and cultures.
It was also interesting to note how in one study how students of color eventually begin to adopt negative beliefs towards each other. It was ironic that these inappropriate behaviors where developed through the language and discussion on the campus among educators. I have seen subtle insults, but I know now that the term is called racial micro aggressions. It was amazing to see in the study how students were able to identify their racial transgressions as structural and not individual.
