In the NPR story “Why Play Doesn’t End with Childhood,” Dr. Stuart Brown clearly defines what play is and how it can help adults to recess. It is very true that play is very necessary and important for adults to release all kinds of pressure from modern life and maintain their social wellbeing. I am well engaged in playing basketball – something that Dr. Brown would regard as play – and it helps me to relieve my stress, train my ability of teamwork and develop my analytical and strategic thinking skills. While Dr. Brown uses poker game as an example to clarify how a game can count as play – it depends on the meaning of the game to the player. Through this process, not only do I get sweaty and healthy, but also I relieve much of my mental stress. As most of people in this modern life, I have a very tight schedule of study and work. While taking 4 classes on campus and as an active member of a student club, I also work part-time two to three days a week to sustain myself financially. Under this condition, basketball plays a key role in helping me get away temporarily from my intense life. It is acknowledged through many studies that physical exercise does help relieve mental stress and charge our brains to work more efficiently. I enjoy moving my body and concentrating on playing the game very much, and after that, I feel very refreshed and more energetic when I go back to my study or work. In addition, I am surprised by my high efficiency after playing basketball – I get rid of all the negative power and the unnecessary worries caused by the life pressure so that I can just focus on whatever I need to do at the
