My other coach from middle school, had decided to put me into the game. I was so excited my adrenaline was rushing. Every day at practice I had been working on my jump shots outside the paint, but close to the three pointer. The one thing my coach had said to me before I walked onto the court was, “If you take the shot, you’re benched the entire game.” At that moment I knew it was a risk I had to take. Throughout my life I have loved playing basketball, but in ninth through eleventh grade in high school I started to hate it, because of all the adversity I faced. There were many factors that were tied up into all of this too. One factor was that I use to be so nervous playing, that it affected my game in a negative way.…

Growing up in southern Louisiana I often found myself sitting around and enjoying the abundance of delicious foods the area had to offer. My family would often eat more fried foods in a day than most families would eat in a week. By the time I was 10 years old I was weighing almost 150 pounds. I often found myself alone watching other kids gather up to play sports in the park. Lacking the physical strength and social skills to compete I often found myself at the early age of 10 seeing a doctor to deal with the stress of not being able to play with other kids.…

Throughout my high school basketball career, I have met with my coach three days per week for one-on-one workouts to perfect my ball handling and shooting form. I wanted to be a much better basketball player, and was willing to put the work in to improve my game every day. I made the Varsity basketball team as a freshman, but didn't see the court at all.…

What I knew at the time was how to love the game. Going into the season I had heard negative things about the coach from players who were still on the team as well as from the ones who had quit. Naively, I disregarded what they said since I only cared that I finally had the opportunity to play high school basketball. I remember walking into the gym on the first day of tryouts hoping to make varsity. Surrounded by friends it would be nothing but exciting and fun – little did I know.…

I still had aspirations of playing at a higher level, but my confidence was completely shaken when I did not make varsity basketball as a freshman. There were four freshman who had been invited to play fall ball with the varsity team from the year before and I was the only one who did not make varsity. I was pulled aside by the coach who told me he just felt I needed a little bit more time to develop. I was furious and I wanted to prove him wrong. After the first scrimmage of the season about a week after I learned I was on JV, the coach called me to the front of the bus on the way home and told me that I would now be practicing with varsity on Sunday’s as well as Saturday’s with the JV team.…
