Why Plastic Is A Problem For Sea Turtles And The Ocean

Improved Essays
Could you possibly imagine the world without any rhinos? In 1970 the population of Black Rhino was 70,000, and now more than half of the rhino population has decreased. By 1995 the Black Rhino population was 2,410. Similarly, other animal populations around the world are decreasing at a surprising rate. If we don't protect them, then these animals will be gone forever. People should help protect endangered species for many obvious reasons, such as it would help with ecosystems, earth would be much cleaner, and it would improve life for future generations to come. First, we should help protect the endangered species for our ecosystems. On the website Nature Matters, it points out that if we help out, we will be able to maintain a healthy and functional ecosystems for the animals on this planet. What I mean by healthy and functional ecosystem is that if zebras become extinct, then those animals that hunt the zebra …show more content…
In the article “Why plastic Is a problem for Sea Turtles and the Ocean,” states that in the ocean, there is on the average “4 to 12 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year” and it is continuing to rise yearly. Because of all the trash, such animals are dying and going extinct. One of the many animals that are dying from the trash in the ocean is the sea turtle. They get wrapped up in plastic from the rings that hold pop cans together. In one instance that I saw from the same article I read ..”when a sea turtle is hungry little pieces of plastic and balloons look like food to them.” Also, in another instance, I saw an image of a sea turtle that, as a baby, he got stuck inside of a ring from a milk jug. The turtle grew abnormally with the ring around him. If we try to save these animals together that it would deplete the amount of trash that is in the ocean, and fix many instances with animals of why they’re

If this number keeps going up then all the animals in the world would be extinct. Lately, the last male white rhino had died at the age of just 48, and it is the last male white rhino. There are only two more white rhinos left and they are both female this is the edge of extinction for the poor white rhinos. In captivity, the animals are kept in a very tight space, but if they were in the wild they would roam freely. Animals even tent to hurt themselves because they are kept in…

The way we neglect our ocean with heavy amounts of pollution can potentially affect our lives in a negative manner. Driving cars and the use of plastic is essential to our daily lives, but we use them without the concern for how they are affecting the habitats on Earth. Some people think that the chance that they are doing harm to the ocean is less important to them than cost or inconvenience of fixing a pollution problem. Through sources from researchers and scientists, they have found evidence of pollution caused by the two essential commodities in our lives, plastic and burning fossil fuels. Environmentalists have found solutions to reduce the plastic waste in our ocean as well as attempting to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere…

Within the past fifty years, people have been creating new ways to save the Earth that we have actually destroyed. These actions are in an effort for total or partial conservation, which came forth in the late eighteen hundreds. The Conservation Movement, which occurred from eighteen-fifty to nineteen-twenty, was to act as an effort to protect America's wildlife, wildlands, and natural resources. However, conservation then and now has been, mostly, for humans. In fact, the conservation movement was created when cities in America became overcrowded after mass industrialization.…

There must be a major push for us to do something about the plastic that pollutes our oceans. As of 2014, there was 311 million tons of plastic in the oceans. With so much plastic, the ratio of fish and plastic was just 5 to1. We cannot allow the amount of plastic in our oceans to rise. Still, though, there is expected to be as much as 1,124 million tons of plastic in our oceans by 2050, making the ratio nearly 1 to 1.…

Trash in our community is a huge problem not only for us, but for the animals in our oceans. To begin, plastic toxins can enter the human food chain and drastically hurt humans and the way their bodies work. “toxins can enter the human food chain through eating seafood and can cause harmful substances to enter the body such as lead, cadmium, and mercury. These toxins are linked directly to cancers, birth defects, immune system problems, childhood developmental issues” (Andrews). Most, if not all toxins are very harmful to the human body, and if you were to consume these toxins, the chances of something going wrong is almost slim to nothing.…

According to scientists, around 150-200 species of plant and animal go extinct every 24 hours. This statistic doesn’t seem so shocking until the realization comes that this is almost 1,000 times the natural rate for extinction. Humans contribute a great amount to this pandemic. A prime example is that of the dodo bird, which was famously hunted into extinction. Around 20,000 species are currently listed as threatened by extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).…

However rhino poaching has reached a crisis point, and if the killing continues at this rate, we could see rhino deaths overtaking births by the year 2016-2018, meaning rhinos could go extinct in the very near future. Figures compiled by the South African Department of Environmental Affairs show the dramatic escalation in poaching over the recent years. Studies and statistics filed by the Department display such information. During 2014, in South Africa alone a staggering 1215 rhinos were killed by poachers which mean that if it calculated, a rhino is killed every eight hours (8…
