Highway litter is just as important as beach litter and any other litter for that matter. Highway litter is killing animals and making the roads look nasty. All the litter on the side of the roads is taking away from the beauty of the roads. The animals come down to the roads to cross until they see the litter. When they see the litter they go over and sniff it. They usually eat the litter and it backs up in their throats and stomach. This could lead to death. The animals could choke and die. According to litteritcostsyou.org, 1.9 billion tons of litter ends up in the ocean each year. Plastic is polluting Earth at a disturbing rate; humans are essentially killing themselves and killing everything else that surrounds them off this planet due to prolonged littering. What most people don’t know, is that litter such as plastic bags and cigarette butts, do not dissolve or disintegrate, or at least within a human’s lifetime. Marine life and other animals that live near bodies of water consume the trash humans carelessly dispose, which kills them due to choking and other hazardous effects from trash consumption.…

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…

Nonetheless, unlike how issues concerning stormwater and rainwater are viewed as “significant,” issues relating to littering are not. There is an immoderate amount of waste that can be found in the laneways of Melbourne due to improper disposal of waste products. In countless laneways and streets, coffee cups, used tissues, half-eaten foods, gum wrappers, and several other rubbish. Although there are rubbish bins that were found located in quite a number of locations, and signs stating ‘No Dumping’(see figure 6), it is evident that there is quite a number of people who choose to avoid using these bins and decide to disobey this rule. However, the amount of rubbish seems to differ highly depending on how frequently the laneway was found.…

An outlet mall in Southern California was full of shoppers, entering and exiting the various stores. As groups of people left the food court around lunch hour, they sipped their coffee. Once they finished their drinks, despite the nearby trash cans, they dropped their cups onto the ground and casually walked off. This is simply one example of littering in our society, but if this issue is not resolved, the ecosystem will suffer greatly. Victorian Litter Action Alliance’s “Litter Statistics Fact Sheet” stresses that as a result of littering, “1 million sea birds and 100,000 marine animals die each year after becoming entangled in or ingesting litter”, which reveals the major impact littering has on our ecosystem (1).…

We take the beaches and ocean for granted, using it as a dump site when we are too lazy to do the right thing by the environment. People do not think before they do, resulting in many horrendous outcomes on the space around them. A large area of water between California and Hawaii was cleaned of all rubbish, showing shocking weight results of six times more plastic than plankton [Santa Barbara News, 2007]. Considering that plastic does not decompose, it would be left in the water, posing a threat on the innocent and unknowing sea creature around it.…
