Why People Chew Gum Experiment

The bizarre idea of chewing without swallowing, is similar to just jogging on the spot without actually moving. So why do people do it? Gum is chewed at least once a month by all kinds of people around the world, whether they are out and about, at school or even at home. Gum has been known to be a booster of concentration, reaction and memory which is why many people chew gum when they are doing tests, homework or schoolwork. This however, has not been outright proven. The experiment that will be conducted will investigate if that statement is true.

This will be tested with Sheep Dash which is a reaction game that records the amount of time a person takes to tranquilize a sheep as it darts across the screen. One person will be instructed to play the game three times without chewing gum beforehand. Four other people will be chewing gum instead; the first person will chew for one minute, the second for 2 minutes, the third for 3 minutes and the fourth for four minutes. They would also repeat this process two more times. This experiment is on a smaller scale than those that have been conducted in the past. When students are struggling in tests or having trouble concentrating in class, chewing gum would give them a short boost to help with their reactions, memory and speed while they a working. For those who hate caffeine, chewing gum would also be a good substitute. It would boost concentration without causing people to have trouble sleeping at night. Not only does this experiment help with studying, but also sports. Chewing a stick of gum before a game could help increase the athlete’s reaction time and therefore game
