Why People Attend Community College

I decided to attend Community College of Rhode Island for a few different reasons. Being an underpaid teenager with my own car, location is a big deal for me. The Liston campus is only 4 miles from my house and takes about 7 minutes to get there. I appreciate how there are numerous campuses around the state and via computer. Distance learning classes not only save me gas, but push me to self-motivate and manage my time wisely. Although I greatly benefit from taking online classes, I find classes on campus more socially stimulating. Being a community college, a diverse group of people attend for the convenience. I’ve found that being forced to work with different types of people not only helps me learn how to communicate more efficiently with

Community colleges are much cheaper than other colleges and they offer specific job preparation. They are also located in relatively close area to where a student would live so you do not have to live on campus and if you have a job or other duties you can take many classes that fit your schedule. Also, these students who graduate for a specific vocation do receive substantial economic payoffs compared to a high school student (Dougherty, p. 405). In the end, the community college can be a great tool to quickly get a degree and go into a profession that you have been trained in but only if the person sticks to their studies and finishes their program. Their competition, though, is what makes them the lesser of the three college…

It has been often said that finishing college does not produce the most intelligent graduates but rather the most disciplined of them. Yet, when considering nationwide graduation and retention rates of community colleges it appears students often decide college is not of great value to them or they simply cannot maintain stability between academics and making a living. In light of President Obama’s ambitious proposal to make community college tuition free, the talk about two year institutions has been centered around reform that would encourage greater student success . In his 2015 State of The Union President Obama addressed the importance of securing financial stability for the middle class and stated, “By the end of this decade 2 in 3…

The peer-reviewed article I chose to read about was “Fake It ‘til You Make It”: Why Community College Students’ Aspirations “Hold Steady,” written by Kelly Nielsen. The article focuses on people who come from low-income families and are also in the lower class of society and how their aspirations of attending a four-year university might change while attending a community college. The purpose of this research is to find out the reasons why people’s aspirations of attending a four-year university change after attending community college. I decided to pursue this topic because I personally know many people who attend community colleges and never end up attending a four-year university for various reasons and wanted to see if there was a common trend as to why people never went on to a four-year university or if it is for personal reasons that vary from person to person. Large numbers of community college students aspire to bachelor’s degrees, but relatively few attain them (Anderson 1981; Brand, Pfeffer, and Goldrick-Rab 2014; Goldrick-Rab 2010; Kane and Rouse 1999; Rouse 1995).…

With a degree from UConn I could cross the country and even the globe and be recognized as a stand out candidate for a job because the school has such a well known academic programs and extensive alumni network. Finally, UConn has much more to offer to it’s students in the forms of clubs, activities, and funding for all the above.…

Another advantage community college students have is the size of the classes. At a community college classes are made up between fifthteen to twenty-five students. This can be a really huge advantage because this gives students a chance to speak with their professor, and this could lead to an easier learning experience. You can easily ask the professor, a question and receive a quick response back unlike waiting a day later, or maybe a week later. At a university, a “…student can be placed in a classroom the size of about two auditoriums stick together with two to three hundred people, possibly watching the professor on a previously recorded tape”.…
