As I sat on the sidelines as we played gym soccer I could see people who just seemed to not care about PE. I didn't really myself as the teacher would push us to strive in gym class. Then I thought to myself "Why does PE need to be mandatory." There are many things that are bad with PE. First of all PE causes bullying to many students. Secondly there are many alternative options to gym class. Finally, kids already get the amount of exercise they need daily. PE should not be mandatory for students to do. With physical education comes bullying. Studies show that 19.5% of kids feel like they are bullied in some form during their physical education class. Generally, two out of ten kids fell like they are bullied during their physical education classes, making them not want to participate and keeping them over weight. Bullying keeps kids overweight. The university of Florida suggest that physical education keeps kids on the sidelines because they feel like they don't want to participate. Bullying in PE may force kids not workout later in life. This is probably since kids already hate PE they feel like they shouldn't work out. Studies show that there is a decrease in healthy activities for kids outside of school. That will keep kids overweight even more. …show more content…
70% of kids from ages 6-11 get the recommended amount of activity they should have. So 7/10 kids get enough activity to not participate in gym class. Most kids already get 60 minutes of activity daily from just playing or biking. Kids already get enough activity from doing things they like to not participate in PE. 60% of kids play sports outside of school. So kids already get 60 minutes of play without gym class. After gym class you burn 350 calories and after hockey of basketball you burn 372. That might be because it's harder during an hour of practice. Have you noticed that Physical Education seems to be a narrowing field? I strongly believe that there is a reason we need to keep PE in schools and in society today. Unfortunately, I feel as though many of the educators and teachers today aren’t taking it seriously. They aren’t doing enough to help the students become physically active, instead, the teachers just sit there because it is a job to them, nothing more. If the teachers had a better personal philosophy on what they actually want to teach, then I feel like PE would be a much stronger field and everyone would want it around.…

Because they are often loosely organized, gym class sports can put athletes at risk of injuries that could hinder their sports season.” What this quote means is exactly what it says, Gym class is almost always unorganized and puts athletes at risk. This would mean The Athlete could be debilitated and play worse when they can move freely and is exempt from things such as casts or splints from breaks or fractures or sprains that could be caused from PE. The parents could get mad and the coach of the team would probably get angry at the school if their player was…

In addition, the article, “How Finland Keeps Kids Focused Through Free Play” by Timothy D. Walker, states, “During these times [recess], they not only rest and recharge—they also learn to cooperate, communicate, and compromise, all skills they need to succeed academically as well as in life.” These social skills learned during recess are important because they can only be learned through free play, not structured activities. To illustrate, the article, “Middle School Recess”, states, “Many social graces are learned on the playground. While Physical Education classes provide a sequential and developmental instructional program for physical fitness, recess allows children to play, make up rules and have choices.” Therefore, despite the fact that Physical Education classes provide similar health benefits as recess, PE is not a true replacement for recess because other social skills can only be learned during unstructured play time, not scheduled exercise.…

“Inactivity is associated with the tripling of childhood obesity since 1970” (Jarret). Recess could dramatically curb that number much lower then that of previous years. Since technology is taking over, most children spend the majority of their free time at home playing video games, watching television, or searching the web. Fifteen to twenty minutes of physical activity a day is all that most children need to stay physically fit and healthy. If not, the lack of physical activity could prove detrimental, and the childhood obesity rate could be, once again, on the rise.…

Sport participation in school does not worsen academic results despite taking time away from class (Maximizing the Benefits of Youth Sport). Athletes know that they don’t have as much time to do schoolwork, which makes them more motivated to use their time for school. Students that aren’t athletes don’t use their free time for school which makes them less likely to do quality schoolwork.…
