Why Nice Guys Finish Last Reflection

ENC 1102 has deepened my understanding in not only social/political issues such as civil rights and gender equality, but also in writing/research techniques. I learned how to find academic sources that have been peer-reviewed in order to back up my papers with evidence and had facts. I also learned how to connect my thoughts to not only our readings but also real world events that may also back up my argument. All of these techniques will help me better my writing for future classes here at FAU and also in my career of medicine as I will be writing quite a lot of academic papers. This semester my favorite writing/reading assignment was “Why Nice Guys Finish Last” by Julia Serano. I choose this reading because it opened my eyes to stereotypes I knew existed, but I did not know actually were very …show more content…
Being able to learn about these topics such as rape culture, gender equality, race within media, and civil rights and write about them opened my eyes to how much I overlook these topics. Of course, I know these issues exist and I have strong opinions towards each I guess I did not know how often they affect me daily without be fully even realizing. This class has taught me crucial skills that I will use in my future writing classes and career, and it has broadened my mind as a democratic citizen. Before this class, I was very closed minded about many social issues and I think it is because I never fully looked into them enough to see both sides. The reading, as well as, our class discussions allowed me to be open and hear people whom I may not fully agree with. As a democratic citizen, I need to be able to communicate with everyone and to hear everyone's thoughts and opinions. This also will tie into my career in the medical field, I need to be able to openly discuss issues and get feedback that I may not have thought of or agree

The course HD 361- Social and Political Contexts of Human Development covered topics such as race/ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, class/wealth, ability, and social status oppression and power/privilege. I have a better concept of understanding the meaning of privilege and power in a society inequality. A systemic structure grants privileges to some people but not to everyone. Privilege is inherent in the structure of our society; the way society is organized and functions. Because our privilege is woven into our lives and circumstances, we most often take them for granted, and rarely stop to consider the benefits, unless they are taken away from us.…

Throughout the semester as a class we have read multiple forms of readings varying in style and meaning. The different types of readings were meant to enrich our minds of knowledge and shape our human experience. After reading some of the forms of literature, such as Walden and Civil Disobedience, A year of Magical Thinking and the Auto Biography of an Ex-Colored Man my mind has expanded to consider different parts of life. I think about the way I live my life and the things I do as a human being. The course as a whole has allowed me to expand my mind, think about different parts of life and nature that I would not pay attention to on a daily basis.…

When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently.…

The first essay that I wrote for EN100 was the Literacy Narrative Essay. Although this assignment seemed dreadful, this essay made me realize how much was expected of me, and how far my writing was from those expectations. Throughout the course of the semester, my writing vastly improved, getting closer and closer to meeting expectations. The Discourse Community Essay was so close to those expectations, and the Informative Essay was right where I wanted it to be.…

Prior to taking ENL 110, I was concerned if I would be able to handle a college writing course. Growing up in the inner-city it was difficult to learn the basic foundations of writing such as grammar and punctuation. As an avid reader, I have had only my ears to rely on to make the appropriate corrections and build sentences. I stepped into the course afraid to write papers, but I was hungry to learn my weaknesses and strengths. This portfolio is a reflection of the progress I have made since I started this course to the brutal end.…

I was able to perceive reading and writing in a more deeper and understanding level, actually see the purpose behind it all. People sometimes do something and never really asked, “why?” I feel like that’s what I was missing in high school. Seems like Teachers follow a linear teaching style and never question the course curriculum they have to follow. Never go into a more understanding of what a course is about.…

It feels like so long ago when I first began this English course. I can remember being so excited about the class topic, racism and social justice, which I felt that I had a lot of passion for. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. This course has tested my endurance, and at many times my patience, and for that I am thankful because I know in the end, it has made me a better writer. Despite various minor challenges this semester I believe that I have put in the hard work that it takes and I have achieved the course goals and will complete this class feeling fulfilled and accomplished.…

Two classes met this goal, Introduction to Psychology (PSY 111) taken at Anne Arundel Community College, and Introduction to Counseling Psychology (PSYC 432) taken at the University of Maryland University College. Introduction to Psychology was the first psychology course I took many years ago. It was the class I took because I had an empty slot on my schedule.…
