Why New York City To Live Here

“Why leave New York City to live here?” That is the question that often follows when someone learns of my family’s decision to move from the capital of the world to settle down in the uneventful Dauphin, Pennsylvania. The justification I generally give involves a statement about New York’s high living expenses and is often accompanied by my convincingly forced laughter. Such conversations lead me to speculate about the vast amount of people who romanticize New York City because of how the media portrays it as: the place where all dreams supposedly come true. I do not mean to sound like a broken record, but, sharing a small one bedroom apartment with five others is not an image you can expect to see on the big screen. On the other hand, the apartment did provide an exceptional view of the building’s garbage collection. Some view living in the big city as an opportunity for maturing in life, however it was not until I was seated at a round table beside my parents and our realtor ready to complete the closing process on our soon to be home in Harrisburg that I realized I had matured into life’s next stage. …show more content…
I had always thought of my situation as a roadblock that would prevent me from achieving all that I yearned to accomplish in life. I had always felt a sense of bitterness and anger directed towards these circumstances which I believed to be so limiting. It was because of my family’s economic and linguistic disadvantages that I was recruited to start helping out at an early age.
