Schools Should Not Apply a School Uniform Policy on Students School uniforms have always been a good topic of discussion ever since the eighties when some public schools applied a school uniform policy. It has even made national headlines when President Bill Clinton stated in his state of the union address in 1996 that he actually recommended school uniforms saying that “if it only helps the students become more disciplined and orderly” (“School Uniforms”). However, school uniforms are extremely unpopular among students and a handful of adults. This despicable policy of school uniforms takes away students’ freedom of expression and makes them look like stuck up rich people that no one likes. Public schools should not apply a uniform policy

“Some parents argue that uniforms should not be mandated in public schools which are supposed to be free for everyone.” (“School Uniforms”) Public schools are meant to be free so telling parents that they must pay for the children’s uniforms is not right when they are already paying for other school supplies such as textbooks, yearbooks and so forth. Also, parents already pay high school taxes and some families make tremendous financial sacrifices to do so and could not afford to pay for their child’s uniform if their school requires one. So requiring uniforms could put a low-income family into a financial crisis they might not be able to get out of. Plus, most schools change their uniforms every year which prevents parents from handing them down to the younger siblings in the family. This would cause parents to spend more money on new uniforms and the uniforms from the previous year would just be junk and would not be able to be used again. Schools are a place where diversity is observed and encouraged and school uniforms would shoot that diversity out of the sky. As junior high schooler Kyle Sumter wrote to the Huffington Post saying: “They decide to teach us about people like Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, and Booker T. Washington… We learn about how these people expressed themselves and conquered and we can’t even express ourselves in the hallways” (“Should”). As previously stated, school is a place where students are free to express themselves without teachers telling them otherwise and applying a school uniform policy will take away the school’s diversity. Also, self-expression is extremely important for a child’s development process and experts believe that forcing uniforms is detrimental to a child’s development. Finally forcing school uniforms infringe students’ constitutional rights. “Freedom of Expression has long been a hallmark of our democracy, and any loss of its privilege is deserving of our careful attention and scrutiny” (“Stifle”). Everyone knows that nobody is allowed to take away any of the peoples’ constitutional rights, yet they fail to realize that applying a school uniform policy is an infringement of the peoples’ right to express themselves which was stated in the Constitution many years
