What is the difference between a challenged and banned book? The difference is a challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. An existing banned book that I have read is, My Sister’s Keeper. By examining the topics of suicide, drugs/ alcohol/ smoking, and underage misbehavior, it is clear that this book should be banned for ages 10 and under. Kids 10 and under shouldn’t read about suicide because their brains should not have to comprehend the thoughts of it. One of the examples from the book that included the topic of suicide is when Jesse considers committing suicide so his organs could be harvested and used to help others. For instance, Jesse steals hood ornaments from expensive cars. He also steals entire vehicles and drives recklessly with them, which could get kids in a lot of trouble nowadays. Plus, Jesse shoplifts and has perpetuated an anthrax hoax. In conclusion, My Sister's Keeper is banned for the use of suicide, drugs/ alcohol/ smoking, and underage misbehavior. I presume children 10 and under should not have to recognize those things, or anything else in that matter. Now, some people over 10 may still not have to recognize those things, but most 10 year olds wouldn't read My Sister's Keeper anyhow because it's a higher reading level.
