First reason for conflicts is Sabatinas wish to have the freedom other European children have. In Europe, all people, regardless of their gender, religion or sexuality have the same rights. However, Sabatinas parents had failed to adapt to the European way of life, and chose to live a conservative Islamic lifestyle, which they wanted to drag their daughter into. Sabatina’s parents, especially her mother, think that she has to settle into an arranged marriage, and live an Islamic lifestyle. However, Sabatina disagrees. The following is an example on how Sabatina refuses to submit to an arranged marriage:
“My mother began watching my every move. One day, when she found a T-shirt that she felt was too skimpy, she smacked me hard in the face with a shoe, splitting my lip. Still, I refused to submit. I didn’t want to disappear into a forced marriage. I wanted my freedom”
Sabatina didn’t want to disappear into a forced marriage. What she meant with that sentence was, that if she agrees to submit into a forced marriage, she would lose her freedom, and no longer have the opportunity to live a life as a free woman.
Finally, the parent’s traditional view also contributes to the conflicts. They moved to Europe, where we have a different way of life, than in their native Pakistan. However, they refused to adapt to the European lifestyle. In contrast to Sabatina, who had already adapted to the European lifestyle, loved the freedom.
