Motivation is a word derived from the word ‘motive’ which means needs, desires, wants or drives within the persons. It is the process of inspiring people to actions to achieve the goals. People are motivated by money, job satisfactions team work, mutual respect, etc. Throughout the duration of this course, I learned that one of the most important parts of being a manager is to create an enthusiastic environment for your employees to carry out their tasks at the best of their abilities. Traditionally, the job of a manager is to delegate and get things done through their employees. In order to achieve this, managers have to be able to motivate their employees. If a manager understands the individual’s nature, they will be able to effectively motivate employees in the workplace. When we wake up to go to go to work, we want to show up full of passion, and energy to fuel our day. I always wonder what drives others to go to work, or school or whatever organization they are involved with. What drives people to achieve their goals or to simply wake up to go to work everyone is motivated by different things. Motivating employees will always be a central concern for people in leadership roles. Most employees need motivation to feel good about their jobs and their overall performance, and then there are the employees who are money driven. When employees are not motivated, they spend very little or no time and effort in their tasks and sometimes avoid showing up to work all together. On the other hand, when employees are motivated, they tend to be persuasive, creative and very productive, they prove very useful to the organization. They volunteer to stay longer, come into work for extra help with or without pay, because they believe in what they are doing. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is what we as humans demonstrate when we are driven by internal rewards. In other words, our motivation to involve ourselves in activities come from a feeling of being personally rewarding, there is no need to show gratitude with material things. Some examples are, playing a sport because you simply find it enjoyable, staying after your shift to help clean up because you are a genuine clean person, or helping a coworker finish a report they’re struggling with, without receiving any recognition. This is the complete opposite of extrinsic motivation, which is where we engage in activities in hopes of receiving proper recognition and rewards in return. Cases of this is when you only help a coworker because he or she agreed to cover your shift on another day, or give you credit on their work, performing a tsk to evade punishment, etc. By using intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, organizations can inspire their employees to be motivated at work. One may wonder which of these motivation is best. Most people may argue that intrinsic motivation is the best, and it might be in some cases but not
