Why Mothers Go Back To School

I was always the “prodigy” of our family. My grandpa would talk about which Ivy League I would attend. My aunt talked me out of being a lawyer, instead proposing I should become a doctor. My mom scolded me for bringing home anything other than an A on a test because I didn’t apply myself as well as I should have. The end of my sophomore year my GPA was 4.1818, and I was four months pregnant. As it often, and ironically, does, academic intelligence doesn’t equate to common sense. I dropped out my junior year of high school to start my new life as a mom. I was 25 when I finally decided to go back to school. Children are usually the main reason mothers go back to school. Although I agree with that, my intentions behind it are different from the normal, “I want to be an example to my kids that you can do anything.” I feel like this is a terrible cliche, and as a daughter of a mother that waited until later in life to return to school, I know how selfish of a decision this seems to children. There are many sacrifices that moms have to make while in college. Many nights that bedtime stories won’t be read because we have to study for tests. We skip many dinners so we …show more content…
After I had decided that’s what I would do, my current job fell into my lap. My starting salary would be as much as the average accountant, and I wouldn’t have any debt from school loans. Now I have years of sales, marketing, and management experience, and found a dream job that required all of that, but also required a degree. My resume was worthless to them. This was a harsh wake-up call that most employers value degrees over

Life in my house was at times an adventure and at other times a misadventure. Deep in the throes of a misadventure and while pregnant with my youngest brother Zach, my mother was unwittingly poisoned. Growing up as the middle child in a lower income family was, at best, difficult. Abusive parents, rampant drug use, and less than caring family members left me in a precarious position as a child. Was this how every family interacted? Is this what I was to become? Growing up I was always told that I would never amount to anything and given little chance to succeed.…

It can be done with an idea, hard work and determination”. That quote defines my high school journey. All my life consisted of education, education, and education.…

Many people say that your infancy shapes who you will become as an adult-in my circumstance, that’s accurate. Growing up in a Hispanic family in America, I am part of the first generation that is supposed to become successful as we reached adulthood. The expectations have always been relentless, but I am thankful for my parent’s hopes. From my first day of kindergarten, to my last year of high school, my parents have always expected me to receive the only grade that in their eyes was worthy- the infamous “A”.…

I have always had a horrible relationship with fractions, similar to the relationship I have with life. The confusion of balancing the numerator and the denominator was similar to the confusion I have with balancing family and school. I come from a family with six children all raised by an immigrant single mother on government social programs. Welfare, Cash Aid, and Medi-cal were the only thing that was keeping my family going. Being on many social programs it really made me feel like a charity case, but I didn’t know what I could do to make a difference in my future.…

I was expected to do well in school, especially after being tagged as an exceptional student at the ripe age of seven, three years before our typical Talented And Gifted program starts. As I excelled through school it was also expected that I would attend college when the time came. My parents were willing to support any decision I made as long as it would challenge me and that I had educated reasons in making my choice. My grandparents were also big supporters of a college education and started a college fund for me before I even started school. My parents and teachers started to do things so that I was prepared for the next level of education.…

The decision of going back to school and finishing my degree has been one that I have toyed with for several years. My final motivation came about 18 months ago from the birth of my first child. I started asking myself, as a father, what am I going to expect and hope to accomplish in the raising of my son? One of the main points I kept coming to was instilling in him a love for knowledge. I believe it would truly make me a hypocrite to expect this from him while having nothing of value to show for my own education to this point.…
