I was actually reading a book for once. Even if I don’t usually get enraptured by many books, this one caught my eye, and I was flying through the pages. Here I was, reading a book about people in robes that can use magic sticks to cast spells. I read on in the book, reading more about how certain people teach the students in robes about certain things they can do with their magic stick. The brown haired boy, which was the main character, was talking to an old man who had lots of experience with the magic sticks that everyone used.…
Reflection Journal #2: Clarke County Mentor Program The Clarke County Mentor Program is a mentor program that was established in March of 1991 as a joint initiative of the Athens Clarke County School District and the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce in order to provide mentors to local students between grades K-12. The program allows mentors to visit mentees during the school hours for about one hour, once a week, for at least an entire year. The mentors are not encouraged to provide academic support but be a genuine adult for the youth to have a stable, caring adult in the life of the child other than their parent or guardian. Mentor-mentee relationships can also be allowed to develop as a community mentorship with the program, and some pairs…
I’ve been member of SAGE since my freshman year both as a mentee and now as a mentor. The experiences I’ve had for the past two years with SAGE have been distinct. When I first came to Towson I was worried about not making a good transition from high school to college both academically and socially. So when I received a call from Raft to live on the residential floor I was excited for the opportunity. This first week I had with SAGE helped easy my anxiety about living away from home and not getting lost in the excitement of being independent.…
At times, it will require much effort on my part, but the benefits of a successful mentorship far exceeds these small inconveniences. Mentees bring fresh ideas and perspective to the table. Being a mentor is part of a noble process that prepares mentees for their future endeavors. Mentoring is a process that is ultimately rewarding and fulfilling for both parties. And last, self-reflection will allow me to gauge how well my techniques are working.…
Who is a Mentor and what is mentorship? It was always a inquisitiveness since I started to work in hospital. When I used to see our sign off mentor with the student nurse, I had a perception of a teacher and a student only. Since I started the Mentorship module my concept of mentoring was wrong. I about the mentorship and a value of being a mentor.…
DuBois and Neville (1997) argue that mentoring programs were largely time limited, issue focused, group oriented, and implemented by trained professionals such as counselors, psychologists, or teachers. They also argue that well-run mentoring programs result in only a "small benefit" for the average child, and poorly designed programs that do not adequately train or screen mentors can be harmful, especially for children who have experienced neglect or abuse. They furthermore state that these at-risk youths need more counseling than an untrained volunteer can typically provide. Such children are often hypersensitive to their mentor's actions and may feel abandoned with little or no justification.…
Some mentors have been through the same thing that some are going through right now and they will be able to speak positive and be an example that they can make it too. Another program is the African American Leadership program that shows young men how not to be followers, but how to lead. This will teach and show them that it's okay to take initiative sometimes and not be in someone else shadow. One last program that would be beneficial is the Young Men of Color Program where adolescents are shown that being an African American is something to be prod of because we have so much to offer to society. All these programs will…
Dear Professional Staff of University Housing: I am writing this letter on behalf of my interest in becoming a Community Mentor. University Housing plays a vital role in student life on campus, and I am interested in helping to foster academic and personal success throughout the residence halls. Becoming a Community Mentor would be an amazing opportunity to allow me to provide the best experience for students around the campus. I am interested in being a Community Mentor for Century Hall as I have been impacted by my Community Mentors, and want to show incoming freshmen all of the amazing resources provided by ASU. Working with others and enhancing their experiences is a passion of mine that I am actively pursuing.…
One program that several universities put in place is peer mentoring in hopes that assigning a freshman to an upperclassman will allow them the opportunity to…
No one understands what goes on in a courthouse until they step into one. I enjoyed every aspect of this semester because I was exposed to so much more than the judge/justice making decisions and punishing people for their wrongful doings. From walking into security to being escorted out at the end of the day it was all an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to shadow Clerks, Court Reporters and even a CSO at the Durham Courthouse. I was skeptical about the entire experience because I have only sat in the body of the court and not behind the stand.…
Peer Mentoring is another student or an adult that can serve as a role model or a helping hand. The mentor, whose job is to encourage, support and inform students to better themselves, serves as an important individual for the youth in the community. A good mentor is familiar with the rules & procedures and can direct students to someone who can properly help fix a problem. Or if the mentor has enough experience with the situation, he/she is able to properly address that person's problem. There are many local mentoring programs also (Big Brothers Big Sisters).…
Like many young leaders I started as an NCO with significant motivation, aggressive approach, and a desire to control all outcomes within the scope of my responsibility. Life, experience, mentorship and above all else failure has definitively shaped me as a leader. Mentorship and experience directly correlate to the profession of arms and the development of leadership proficiency. However, I find that the spectrum of life and lessons from failures (both professionally and personally) more significantly contribute to leader development in the form of maturity and ability.…
A peer mentor is defined as a person who uses their resources to support, encourage and inform someone. Going into this semester, I was unaware that I would be mentoring another student and thus doubted my abilities. Although I was excited to become a mentor, I questioned whether I would truly be able to make a difference in someone’s life. The difference that I wanted to make could be as simple as helping someone ace a test, but the news of mentoring threw me off track. Nonetheless, I gathered myself and tried to maintain a positive attitude.…
By critically looking at my mentoring habits I hope to be more accessible to my mentees and to be a better planner of my meetings. Before training at the beginning of the semester, I thought mentoring was just about giving advice. I now know that it is way more than that. You do give advice but you also have to give tools to constructively help students.…
Mentor Today For A Better Tomorrow Patrick was twelve years old and in love with the game of basketball. He spent the majority of his summer at the local high school and YMCA practicing for next year’s tryouts. Since everyone always made the team in the past, he was a little nervous about his first real test and the potential of being cut from the team. Even though the basketball season didn’t start for months, he was dedicated to being the best.…
