Why Mental Illnesses Commit Suicide

Why do people with mental illnesses commit suicide more frequently and how can it be prevented? Suicide is a major problem in today's world as it accounts for over 800,000 deaths per year(LJUŠIĆ 368). The most common age for suicide is between 15-29 (For Suicide). Mental illnesses are a major part of suicidal people, psychiatric disorders are present is 80-90% of all suicidal people who kill themselves (LJUŠIĆ 369). Most of which are not noticed by the individual and are treatable which if they had been treated then their chance for suicide would have decreased greatly. Harris and Barraclough have reported that the risk of suicide has increased 5 to 15 fold in people with psychiatric disorders (LJUŠIĆ 369).
Mental disorders are very common all over the world, approximately 1 in 5 adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder or illness. There are many different mental disorders to be aware of that could cause someone to be suicidal. The main one and most dangerous is depression, it is classified as a mood disorder and includes different ranges and types of depression such as Major depression and dysthymia. All forms of depression can affect a person's social, occupational, educational, and many more aspects of life.
