Why Mental Health Care Is Stigmatized In The Black Community

Therapy is a way to get help with a mental health problem, or get extra support if you are going through a tough time. In therapy, there is a lot that goes into helping with your mental health. you'll have meetings with a therapist to talk and learn. You'll learn skills to cope, feel better, and get help with the problems you're having. In the black community, the cultural stigma surrounding therapy has lost historical factories that go into depth. But there are two main factors that stand out to me, one being stereotypes and financial ability. The black community has stereotypes and misconceptions often leading to shame, secrecy, and denial of mental health issues. Because of the financial barrier, I think that's where negative thoughts come in about therapy. Many individuals may perceive therapy as inaccessible or unaffordable, making it less likely for them to seek help. That's where I hear a lot of negative talk. For example, it’s a “scam”. It's so important to address mental health issues in the black community. For years and generations mental health has been a big issue. The more mental health is not taken seriously, the more it will continue to be generational. Within the Black community, there is a history of experiencing systemic racism, discrimination, and trauma, including historical traumas such as slavery, segregation, and racial violence. This history has had a long-lasting effect on mental health and well-being, leading to higher rates of trauma-related disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and complex trauma within the community.
