I believe Meharry Medical College resides among the best medical schools in the country. In fact, it is the first medical school in the South for African-Americans. Meharry has a reputation for teaching its students about the rigors of medicine while instilling priceless qualities required for a career in medicine such as integrity, dependability, and competence. Dr. Joshua O. Williams, a Meharry alumnus, was the first person to introduce me to Meharry Medical College. Dr. Williams expounded in great detail the important role that his education at Meharry played in allowing him to excel as a urologist. Meharry’s reputation for excellence is only strengthened by the historical significance of its predecessor Samuel Meharry. I believe Samuel Meharry’s experience with the hospitality shown by a black family created a culture of benevolence that still manifests in the graduates of Meharry. Meharry’s dedication to teaching and training physicians will allow me to develop a sense of self-assurance when encountering complex issues and situations in the medical field. Meharry’s program would also enhance my abilities to lead creating a space in which to serve my community. Moreover, this program will provide me with the resources and mentorship needed to succeed as a medical student. I believe Meharry also provides its students with a deeper sense of community that is vital in ensuring physicians give back to the community that has done so much to encourage and inspire them.
