Imagine living in Colorado and walking outside to the fresh smell of … Marijuana? Yes, marijuana. Colorado voters made history in November 2012, when they approved Amendment 64 by 55% of the vote. Amendment 64 meant that adults twenty-one or older would be allowed to privately use, home grow, and have a limited possession of marijuana. Amendment 64 also established regulations for tax distribution from the sales of marijuana; similar to the alcohol regulations that started in October 2013. There are also state regulations to hold permits to grow, process, and sale industrial marijuana products. The calculations of a DUI for marijuana are that if a person has five or more anagrams of THC per milliliter of blood within their system, they are considered driving under the influence. So instead of a breathalyzer test like when you consume alcohol, for THC police officers would ask you to take a blood test. This is also controversial because every person processes THC levels different. Either someone processes it too fast or slow, so when a person is tested they can either fail or pass even if they aren’t high or too high to be driving. Although marijuana is only a schedule one drug and isn’t as addicting as other drugs, one out of every ten users become addicted to marijuana.(Drug Facts) Although many marijuana users disagree that lung health risks affect them, its proven smoking of all kinds increase the risk of lung cancer. Some researchers even say smoking marijuana is more dangerous than tobacco because it contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons, giving users an even higher chance of getting lung cancer. When marijuana users inhale the smoke they typically hold it in their lungs longer than tobacco users, which allow more of the carcinogens to be exposed to their lungs.(Pros & Cons) There are also heart problems aside with lung problems, because users are at a higher risk of having a heart attack when they smoke and faster heart rates. (Drug Facts) So really it’s not what is inside of the marijuana that’s causing these health problems it’s the effect of smoking it; consumption of edibles and drink don’t have these same risks of the heart and
