Why Lipids Are Not Macromolecules

Improved Essays
Lipids are essential for storing energy. Just like carbohydrates, there are made from atoms of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Unlike macromolecules, lipids do not form polymers. The thing that makes lipids special is that the all have little or no affinity for water. This is due to the fact they consist mostly of hydrocarbons, which form non polar covalent bonds. These molecules are known as hydrophobic(“ water fearing”). Although lipids are not strictly polymers, they are large molecules assembled from smaller molecules by dehydration reactions. A fat is constructed from two kinds of smaller molecules: glycerol and fatty acids. glycerol is a three-carbon alcohol with a hydroxyl group attached to each carbon. It is linked to fatty

Non polar molecules like oils and fats do not dissolve in water but instead stay separate. They do not mix as the non-polar molecule has the electro negativities of the two atoms equal. Dipole- dipole forces are the forces that attract the positive end of a polar molecule to a negative end of another polar molecule. These are the forces that bond the electronegative polar oxygen molecule with the positive polar hydrogen molecule. Dipole-dipole forces account for water being attracted to most substances (adhesion).…

The four macromolecules that consist in all living organisms are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Everyone of these macromolecules has essential responsibilities in people daily functions. “They are able to establish large strings of molecules that both support and carry out life’s functions.” (Daempfle, 2016) They are also gathered and ungathered for use by cells.…

Sucrose and Starch are also covalent molecules but they are sugars meaning they are polar covalent. All covalent compounds are molecules, but there are different types of compounds. Sugars have similar properties to molecules and salts. They have “inbetween” properties making them polar covalent compounds. Polar covalent compounds have properties such as soluble in water, not conductive, and relativity a medium melting point.…

It has long been studied that saturated fats increase cholesterol. Mono-unsaturated (one carbon double-double bond) and polyunsaturated (more than one carbon double-double bond) found primarily in vegetable oils, tend to lower cholesterol and therefore better for your health. Higher cholesterol elevates the chances of getting coronary heart disease. Back in the 1950’s, it was discovered that animal fats could be substituted with vegetable oils in the substance we know as margarine. This meant that polyunsaturated fats such as vegetable oils could be hardened and made into “partially hydrogenated fats,” transforming from its natural liquid state to a partially solid state.…

Lipids are macromolecules that are used for storing energy and providing hormones that regulate metabolism. Nucleic acids contain polymers called nucleotides that assist in genetic transfer which are DNA or RNA. Many proteins regulate cell processes such as transporting substances in and out of cells to provide a defense against disease. Without the presence of nitrogen none of these macromolecules would exist or function to provide human life.…

Eating a lot of immersed fat is an awful thought. Why is immersed fat terrible for our wellbeing? A very long while of biomedical exploration have given bits of knowledge. Case in point, we realize that immersed fats lessen the limit of the liver to expel low thickness lipoprotein particles from the circulatory system. This expands the convergence of "awful" cholesterol and triglycerides, which lift one's danger of creating atherosclerosis and cardiovascular ailments.…
