Hanging on the wall at my eye level, a vivid painting depict a mountain lion, a dog, and a man caught my attention. Sitting in front of the tree, a man is holding a colt revolver on his right hand and a bowie knife on his left, the weapons he possibly used to kill the mountain lion lying in front of him. A black dog is sitting obediently next to the man. As the man’s mixed facial expression triggered my curiosity to find out more of his story, I took a step closer to this painting, Peter Quivey and the Mountain Lion by Charles Christian Nahl. The painting clearly displays the domination of human over wild lives.…

In his 1997 documentary film Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, Errol Morris directs the fascination of a man’s action that profoundly emanates his relationship with the world around him. The four men: Dave Hoover, a Wild Animal Tamer; Ray Mendez, the Hairless Mole-Rat Specialist; George Mendonca, a Topiary Gardener; and Rodney Brooks, a Robotic Scientist, each obsessed to create unconventional worlds of their aspirations. The film has a disrupted narrative format, interweaving interviews with the men and emerging a continual dialogue between the men in a way that accentuates what connects these men together, while their jobs would seem to be in such different realms to keep them apart, it doesn’t. Also the usage of black-and-white monochrome…

In "The Stripes Will Survive" by Jacqueline Adams, "The Zoos Go Wild" by Nicholas Nirgiotis and Theodore Nirgiotis, and the video “Behind The Scenes with the National Zoo’s Lion Cubs”, all of the texts claim that the role of zoos is to protect animals from extinction or from harmful things in the wild. Whether certain animals have potentially fatal diseases or are disabled in some way, zoo keepers are there to protect the animals and help them grow and strive in areas where they are not skilled. In "The Stripes Will Survive", the text explains what specialists are doing to prevent the extinction of Siberian tigers. Two twin Siberian tigers are included in the story to help the text flow into saying what is being done to help these endangered species. This nonfictional story is an example of how the role of zoos is to protect animals.…

A mountain lion is generally an apex predator (presuming for the moment that you're leaving humans out of the equation). Depending on its abilities as compared to the local apex predator, it may replace that predator by taking all its prey, it may come to live side-by-side with the indigneous species, or it may not be as well-suited to the existing environment as the local predator, so the introduced predator may live a comparatively short time. Without more information, it's impossible to say. Loss of a large percentage of the wolf population (also generally an apex predator) would allow its prey to go unchecked.…

Enrichment Recommendations Enrichment 1: In this scenario, the captive lions exhibit stereotypic pacing behaviors around feeding times. To address the welfare concern of pacing in these captive lions, I would recommend a change in the way food is presented. Felids engage in appetitive behaviors to obtain their food (Shepherdson et al, 1993), and these behaviors include locating, capturing, killing and consuming their prey (Lindburg, 1988). Varying the method and timing of food delivery by either hiding food items in the exhibit for the lions to find or randomizing feed schedules may be biologically relevant as it would allow the captive animals to engage in species-specific behaviors that resemble those found in the natural habitat.…
