Why Levels K-8 Should Be Required Courses

Decent Essays
Honestly, I don't agree or disagree I just have my own opinion. Grade levels k-8 should be required courses, because that is when the foundation is built for students. Once you enter high school, students should be able to pick their own courses. However, I believe the only courses that should be required are English and gym.

English helps the interaction with one another, our word selection, and knowledge. Gym because people are out of shape and don't get enough exercise. Letting kids pick their own courses will give them motivation to come to school because they are doing something they wanted to do. Allowing students to do so it leaves them with more responsibility, which can help prepare them for college better.

When every student is entangled in taking all 3 Sciences or all 4 Maths courses in order to get into an good program, they do not get the chance to take courses in the Social Science and Arts fields that they might be interested. It is true that students should know what their plan for the future is before grade 12 and grade 11 was the year intended for students to explore their strengths and weaknesses, but because there are so many prerequisites in grade 11 that students must take in order to take most grade 12 courses such as science and math that have prerequisites and do not allow for any other courses to be taken. This is why the fifth year should be mandatory for all high school students because it allows students to complete prerequisites but also explore a variety of courses. Also, the fifth year allows students to take courses they are curious or interested about.
