Why Jews Follow The Torah

Decent Essays
According to the Jews the Torah is there holiest book. The Jews say that these words were spoken from God himself. The entire Jewish lifestyle is based on the Torah. Every Saturday is the Sabbath for the Jews, and every Sabbath the Jews study the Torah at home or in a synagogue. The Jewish people also celibate many Jewish holidays in a synagogue. Why do the Jews follow the Torah? Is it out of fear or happiness and pleasure? In the Bible it says," Follow my commandments and you will go to heaven, but if you don't you will go to hell." I don't get it if Jews followed the Torah by fear than why take so much pride in being a Jew. The Torah also says that if the Jews follow the Torah the jews will have a descendant as numerous as the stars. Is

The authors, Mead, Hill, and Atwood describe the beginnings of Judaism as a branch of the Christian religion. Throughout time, these religions have altered and shifted, both growing and blossoming in their own way. In my opinion, the most unique belief of Judaism is that in their eyes, Jesus was not the Messiah. Being a Christian, I was taught in my church that Jesus is the embodiment of God and that he was brought to the Earth to sacrifice his life for our sins and to expand the word of the gospel. As Mead, Hill, and Atwood claim, the followers of Judaism do not agree with this idea.…

Shabbat is the holy day; the day when Jews rest and go to synagogue. Most importantly, Shabbat is the day of which God rested during the creation of the world, and all Jews must act in accordance to God. In one sense, Shabbat is the day that we honor all of which God has given us; it is a time to reflect on all of the things that we are privileged enough to have today. Moreover, this resting day was a commandment of…

In class I learned about how the Jews were the “chosen” people of God. They were a special group of people who lived in a very exclusive and close-knit community and learning about Kashrut has just restated the same idea. Eating is something that one does every day every week. Whenever they are eating food Jewish people are reminded by the Kashrut that they are the chosen people of God (My Jewish Learning “Kashrut 101”). Being Jewish makes one enter an exclusive group of people.…

Judaism maintains that the righteous of all nations have a place in the world to come. This has been the majority rule since the days of the Talmud. Judaism recognizes that Christians and Moslems worship the same G-d that we do and those who follow the teachings of their religions can be considered righteous in the eyes of G-d. Contrary to popular belief, Judaism does not maintain that Jews are better than other people. Although we refer to ourselves as G-d's chosen people, we do not believe that G-d chose the Jews because of any inherent superiority. According to the Talmud (Avodah Zarah 2b), G-d offered the Torah to all the nations of the earth, and the Jews were the only ones who accepted it.…

We visited the Synagogue on Shabbat to attend a combination of a mitzvah service and a regular Shabbat service. Shabbat is Hebrew for rest and on Saturdays Jews use this day of rest to praise god and reflect on their religion. Jews are forbidden from doing certain things on Shabbat, such as, cooking, driving, handling money, using the phone, turning on lights, and writing letters. As one can see Shabbat is quite restrictive, however, these laws are in place to ensure that Jews show proper reverence and attention to god as well as their religion. This day of rest is the same day as the Catholic church, however, in the Jewish Religion God took the day of rest on Saturday.…

It is When I read the Bible that I am able to trust the validity of the text and know that it is not altered or based on interpretation. As Dr. Schorsch states, “The Torah is the foundation text of Judaism,”(Sacred Cluster). Dr Schorsch believes that scripture is the basis for the Jewish religion. In addition, Norman Lamn addresses the importance of the Bible when he states, ”I believe the Torah is a divine revelation in two ways; in that it is God given and in that is Godly…what he said must be intelligible to humans…the study of Torah therefore is not only a religious commandment per se, but the most exquisite and the most characteristically Jewish form of religious experience,” (Jewish belief). Schorsch and Lamn’s ideologies that Judaism is religiously based on the Torah are ideas that I strongly connect to.…
