I finally decided to become a vegan. No, it’s not because I am opposed to slaughtering animals for food. And no, it is not for religious or spiritual reasons. The reason is pure and simple – for my health. After reading the book “How Not to Die” by Dr. Michael Greger [Amazon link], I became convinced that becoming a vegan is the way to better health and vitality. In his book, Dr. Greger discusses the many reasons why a plant-based diet is the path to avoiding diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. Although it took an extraordinarily long 500-page book to make his point, the fact is that Dr. Greger did such a good job of putting the scientific facts in a convincing way that I’ve decided to change my diet once and for all.
According to Dr. Gregor, eating a plant based diet will ward off the most common diseases for the following reasons:
Heart Disease Blocked arteries and heart disease is largely caused by “bad” cholesterol, or LDL. This cholesterol comes from (1) transfat, (2) saturated fat, and (3) dietary cholesterol – which are mostly derived from animal products, including eggs. [p.22]. Aside from the produce section, most grocery stores have a section of vegetarian products in the freezer section. The other day, I gave my son some Morning Star [Amazon link] buffalo “chicken” nuggets that were actually made from soy for lunch. I was surprised how deliciously crunchy and zesty they were. They tasted just like real chicken. When I asked my son whether he like them, he said yes. My son, a picky eater, did not know that they were made from soy instead of chicken either. This shows that goes vegan can be done. Baby steps, my friends. Baby steps
