In the factory they make workers tend more machines to make more profit. Due to this Lyddie works longer and gets paid less. In the text it says “[Lyddie is working] longer hours, tending more machines.” Lyddie is working longer hours tending more machines. This is a good reason why Lyddie should signed the petition. Also the owners wanted to have more pocket money. They speeded up the looms to a devilish speed making it hard for workers to work and make cloth. In the text it says “[The looms] have been speed it up to a demon pace.” Lyddie loom was sped up. This exhausted Lyddie giving her another reason to sign the petition. Lastly Lyddie is doing more work. The work she is doing is very dangerous and injury-prone. In the text Lyddie says “In those days I had one hundred thirty spindles to tend. Now I’ve twice that many at a speed that would make the devil curse.” Lyddie is working more at a faster pace. This is dangerous and can give Lyddie a serious injury. Due to the horrible conditions Lyddie should sign the petition. When Lyddie first came to the factory, she was in awe of the plight of the factory. The factory conditions were horrific. Lyddie says “How could she say she could see hardly anything in the morning gloom of the huge, barnlike the very air a soup of dust of lint.” She had a hard time seeing. This was due to clustered and filthy air in the factory. When Lyddie first entered the factory her reaction was abysmal. She said it looked like “A factory was a hundred stagecoaches all inside one skull.” The factory was small. It was so small it felt like one hundred stagecoaches are in one skull, making it crowded. Lastly, in the factory it is very loud. This loudness made it harder to work. In the text it says “clatter crack, great shuddering, moans, groans, creaks, and rattles. The shrieks and whistles of huge leather belts on wheels…Lyddie saw through the murky air.” Lyddie heard a lot of noise. She heard lots of noise and the air in the factory was harsh it was unbreathable. Lyddie should sign the petition for this reason.
Even though there are reasons Lyddie shouldn’t sign the petition, like she will be blacklisted and she will get paid even less than what she is paid now, she should sign the petition. She is working longer hours and doing more work. Also she is getting paid significantly less, in regard to the number of hours she work. And lastly, the working conditions in the factory
