The term “Redskins” has many opposing interpretations, and to some, has the racial equivalence of other demeaning slurs. The big question: is the term “Redskins” (being proudly promoted by Washington’s professional football team), a truly offensive term? A majority of the Native American population would say no and as little as 9% (of the 768 people who participated in polling) said the name was offensive (The Ammenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania). Nevertheless, a federal judge ruled that the team cannot legally register trademarks for its “Redskins” nickname (Federal Judge Delivers Another Legal Blow To ‘Redskins’ Team Name). The term "Redskins" is not fundamentally offensive, and should not be challenged for its civility, because it “offends” only a small population of people that don’t remotely have any relevance to the sport of football.…

Tashof’s sneaky credit practices is what led me to believe his conduct was unethical. I wonder how many of the 1,400 pairs of eyeglasses were purchased using credit. Tashof knew the financial strain of his customers, and most likely appealed to their situation to convince them that paying a little here and there was much more affordable than paying the full price of the eyeglasses. Even though this happened years ago, it is still very disturbing that a person would choose to take advantage of person/ s this way.…

What’s in a team name? Grittiness and toughness and determination. It is just one part of an organization, but a team name can be the fuel for reaching success and wanting to achieve greatness. A team name is something that rallies a group of people together to fight for one common cause, which is winning a championship, not something to make fun of or to portray in the wrong way. When it comes to the issue of controversial mascots, there are several disagreements.…

“Should Gamers Be Prosecuted For Virtual Stealing?” by Alex Weiss is an argumentative essay in which he calls out the criminal system for allegedly putting on trial a teenager for committing theft in a virtual game. Even though it was a very straightforward trial, it quickly turned heated when questioning whether or not it was correct to trial him. Also, more important, it makes us ask ourselves, are actions in a game a proof of a person’s ethical values and beliefs? Weiss states that putting someone on trial for virtual theft is not only incorrect but also dangerous. Just because someone committed a lot of crimes in a game, it means he will commit these crimes in the real life.…

With one swift movement across your keyboard, you can easily offend other people from across the globe in part of the progression of technology in the modern days. Whether that be on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or even in an online chatroom, racism is a widespread issue throughout the Internet because of how easy it is for someone to type something online. The book “Citizen: An American Lyric” by Claudia Rankine expresses many realities where people in the US display racism as a microaggression, which is a subtle, usually distasteful comment about another 's person 's race. One example Rankine talks about is when “Caroline Wozniacki, a former number one player, imitates Serena by stuffing towels in her top and shorts”(Claudia Rankine 111) and proceeded to impersonate and mock her opponent Serena Williams at an exhibition game on December 12, 2012. Rankine addresses these social microaggressions as a another obstacle for a “detractor”(Rankine 113) to overcome,…

Spotlight is about the investigative reporting unit of the Boston Globe, a somewhat autonomous journalistic arm of the newspaper. In 2001, Marty Baron, the newly hired editor-in-chief, asks the crew to drop the story they're currently working on and focus on allegations regarding a priest named John Geoghan (who's accused of molesting more than 80 boys). The team initially doubts whether the story will pick up traction with the local community, and are hesitant in pursuing it, feeling that Baron (who is neither locally raised nor catholic) is a bit of an outsider who doesn't understand what news is important to Bostonians. The team talk to lawyers who have or are working on alleged sex abuse cases perpetrated by Catholic priests in Boston (those lawyers including Eric MacLeish and Mitchell Garabedian), known victims (such as Phil Saviano, the head of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP)) and insiders in the Catholic church. Through this investigation, they get wind that the problem is not contained to one priest and one victim, in essence changing the focus from the priests to the systemic problem of the Archdiocese not only covering up the abuse but in reality doing nothing to stop it and thus condoning it.…
