Why Is Tom Robinson Unfair

The jury of Maycomb is pro white, meaning they are unfair and racist during the case and trial of Tom Robinson. They Believe Tom Robinson is guilty just for the color of his skin. The racism is shown throughout the book, not just with the jury, with the people of Maycomb also, the complexities and acts of these people are shown throughout the book, but it was mostly shown during the trial of Tom Robinson. The trial of Tom R. included atticus’ speech and the state of the courtroom is racist. The residents of the Maycomb hold long standing reservation and regarding African Americans, yet atticus attempted to appeal the humility and sense of reason in order to do what is right. The right thing being that Tom Robinson is not guilty, but because …show more content…
“The state has not provided Lots of medical evidence to the effect that the crime Tom R. Is charged with never took place.” What this proves is that logically when a female is raped they are taken to the doctors for medical attention. If Mayella was raped she would’ve most likely went to the hospital, especially if it was Tom who raped her since he is black and Mayella is white. Mayella wasn’t taken to the hospital which is how Atticus logically defended Tom Robinson. Lastly Atticus used pathos to emotionally truth to Mayella that the truth is known the day it heard. Atticus states “ have nothing but pity does the extended so far as a man's life at stake what she has in her own quiet.” Atticus is trying to make Mayella feel guilty for putting an innocent man's life at risk to cover for something. Hoping Mayella would feel guilty and admit to the jury that Tom isn’t guilty of rape. Although everyone in Maycomb was against Atticus’ decision, he still did a righteous thing by doing what was right and defending Tom Robinson. Nobody wanted Atticus to defend him but Atticus knew it was the right thing and he showed integrity in the court and during the

One last reason Tom Robinson may be accused guilty is because Mr. Ewell insists that he saw Tom rape his daughter Mayella. Mr. Ewell says he was returning home and he looked through a window of the house and saw Tom raping her. Then before he could catch Tom he ran away. One may think that Mr. Ewell is lying because Ewells do not seem like people you can trust. One can see that Tom Robinson could be pronounced not guilty for a few reasons.…

A colored man by the name of Tom Robinson is wrongly accused of raping Mayella Ewell and was taken to court yesterday August 26th 1935 in Maycomb where there was a very embroiled fight between the two sides. Atticus believed that she felt guilty about tempting a black man and she wanted to never see him again, so she accused Tom of raping her and beating her in her own home. In this case it would be the easiest case they’ve ever dealt with but, since Tom is black and Mayella is white, everyone says Tom is guilty anyway. According to Tom Robinson and what Atticus (the lawyer for tom) was trying to prove by asking Mr. Ewell questions like what is his dominant hand and so forth, Atticus was trying to prove that Mr. Ewell was responsible for Mayella…

He caught the ball with his right hand. Atticus asked him to catch it with his left and said he couldn’t, and explained the cotton gin incident. The jury seemed to have ignored this piece of evidence while deciding the verdict, because if they did, it would have been very hard to say Robinson…

On page 272 to 273, Atticus states “We do know in part what Mr. Ewell did: he did what any God-fearing, persevering, respectable white man would do under the circumstances---he swore out a warrant no doubt signing it with his left hand, and Tom Robinson now sits before you, having taken the oath with his only good hand he possess--- his right hand.” This part of the text clearly shows that Tom Robinson couldn’t have beaten Mayella, because as previously stated someone had beaten her savagely with their left hand, and Tom Robinson has an injured left hand as Mr. Ewell dominant hand is his left hand. This proves Robinson could have not have done it because of his hurt hand. Also this can be proven with the quote on page 272, Atticus says, “What was the evidence of her offence?…

Undeserved Prejudice The sixteenth president of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln, explained that "[w]hatever you are, be a good one. " Lincoln was implying that no matter what skin color you are, you should be the best you can be and be fair to all. Unfortunately, in Harper Lee's To Kill Mockingbird, Tom Robinson, a black man, faces prejudice, because the white men in the jury cannot be their best selves and vote fairly. Though he did not rape Mayella Ewell, a poor white woman, the people of Maycomb county can not look past the fact that Tom is black; he is found guilty and eventually is killed for it.…

Another piece of evidence can be found on page 205, where Atticus Finch makes a powerful speech during the courtroom scene, and states, ¨Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal.¨ This quote had Atticus trying to convince the jury that they should not come to a decision based on the fact that Tom Robinson was black, but rather on the substantial evidence. He says this because he knows that the jury had a tendency to rule against the black man at all times because of his different color. They do not review every single piece of evidence, this causes Tom to be sentenced to prison without even committing a crime that…

During the questioning in the trial, Mr. Gilmer treats Tom a lot differently than Atticus treats Mayella and Bob Ewell. Atticus is very respectful to whomever he questions; he calls Mayella by “ma’am” or “Miss Mayella.” He didn’t bully them into giving him an answer. Mr. Gilmer, on the other hand, does. Dill had noticed and had been upset about how Mr. Gilbert sneered at Tom Robinson as if he were vermin and treated him as if he were less than himself.…

He is on trial for being an accused rapist, but the audience notices something about him, his left arm is crippled , Atticus is in the testimony of Mayella, he explains to the court “He got it caught in a cotton gin...when he (a) was boy...like bled to death… tore all the muscles from his bones”(page 249). Him telling this to the court shows that he is incapable of physically harming Mayella Ewell. Another example is when Scout, Jem and Dill are present at the case listening to the testimony of Tom Robinson . Scout realizes the reasoning for Mayella to have went below her skin color to feel a type of connection with someone ,the explanation is shown by Scout thinking “As Tom Robinson gave his testimony, it came to me that Mayella Ewell must have been the loneliest person in the world”(page 250).…

Atticus has courageously raised his children to not judge others until you know their story and what they are going through. The texts also states, “I’m simply defending a ‘Negro’- his names Tom Robinson,” (Page 75). This is the most extreme example of courage in this novel because Atticus is defending an African-American during the time of racial segregation. Taking this case is potentially dangerous for Atticus considering the whites in Maycomb want Tom to be found guilty of rape. The town of Maycomb is upset with Atticus for defending him during the trial, nut Atticus still continues to do everything in his power to guarantee that Tom receives a fair trial.…

In Maycomb County, a Negro stands no chance of winning a case over a white woman, even when falsely accused. This is because racism pervades it, stamping itself both in the minds and mouth of the little school children, within the corners of the streets, all over the town, etc. That is the reason why Tom Robinson, a Negro, who is falsely accused of raping Mayella Violet Ewell is found guilty even after he has been proved totally innocent by Atticus. His crippled left hands, the exemption of medical check-ups for proper verification, ex cetera ; all these evidences prove Tom innocent of the crime he is filed against.…

Atticus was given the case to defend Tom, but when Tom was found guilty Miss Maudie told Scout that “Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men’s hearts Atticus had no case. Tom was dead the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed” (323). Atticus did everything he could to make the people of Maycomb open their eyes and realize that Tom is not guilty of any crime, but unfortunately society at that time in America was not fair.…
