Why Is The Planet Mercury: Close To The Sun

Decent Essays
The planet Mercury is the closet planet to the sun. That means it’s really hot on Mercury! The temperature can get as hot as 750 degrees Fahrenheit and as cold as -328 degrees Fahrenheit. That is a very big jump in temperature! This temperature jump happens because Mercury is so close to the sun and because it has almost no atmosphere. An atmosphere is layers of gases that protect a planet from the sun rays and from outer space rocks. Mercury does not have enough gravity to hold an atmosphere. Without an atmosphere Mercury can get hit by asteroids, meteors, and comets. Most of the surface of the planet is hard, rocky, and full of craters or deep circular holes. In fact, Mercury must have been hit by something big to create the crater known

Venus has an atmosphere consisting of 95.5% Carbon Dioxide and 3.5% Nitrogen, although other minerals can be traced such as; Carbon Monoxide, Helium and Argon. The amount of Carbon Dioxide in Venus's atmosphere causes a severe greenhouse effect, lifting the temperatures to about 870 Fahrenheit and -365 at night! The Greenhouse Effect is when heat gets trapped in the clouds, causing the body to warm up. Also it's atmosphere is very reflective.…

The discussion for this assessment is to explain, “Why was Pluto demoted to a dwarf planet?” While searching for another planet to explain irregularities in Neptune’s orbit, Pluto was discovered in 1930 by astronomers. At that time, the astronomers gave Pluto very little consideration due to its size, about the size of earth, and way too small to have any affect in altering Neptune’s orbit. As time passed, and technology improved, the size of Pluto was reexamined through improved satellite images, and found to be less than half of Earth’s diameter. Most recently, calculations established on images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope, show that Pluto’s about one- fifth the diameter of earth and half that of Mercury (considered the runt of…

WASP-12b, a planet that is a staggering 871 light years from earth, is currently being eaten by a star. This hot jupiter has come so close to its sun that it has begun to deteriorate and even become egg-shaped because of the extreme gravity. It is also one of the hottest planets currently known to man at 2,525 degrees celsius. The orbit around its star takes only 26 hours in contrast to our 365 days. Besides the fact that it would take hundreds of generations for a modern day spacecraft to travel to WASP-12b and the fact that the amount of fuel, food, and water would be absurd as well as the oxygen supply and spare parts for a battered ship, you would also need to carry some of the following items.…

Like the other gas giants,Uranus doesn't have a firm surface. Scientists define the surface as the region where the atmospheric pressure exceeds one bar, the pressure found on Earth at sea level. Just above the "surface", since Uranus is a gas giant, of Uranus lies the troposphere. The temperature ranges from minus 243 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 153 degrees Celsius) to minus 370 F (minus 218 C), with the upper regions being the coldest. With temperatures like those it makes the atmosphere of Uranus one of the coldest in the solar system.…

Earth sized storms continuously rage in the Neptune’s atmosphere. Winds on Neptune can reach up to 1,500 kilometers per hour, which is the fastest on any planet. The heat inside the planet causes these violent conditions. Temperatures in Neptune range from around -220ºC on the cloud surface, to a core that measures up to an absurd 7,000ºC. This is even hotter than the Sun’s surface, which is in comparison, only around 5,505ºC. History:…

With an average surface temperature of -229C, Pluto’s surface is mostly constituted by icy formations of frozen rock and water (Cain). The climate of Pluto does not diverge too much from the already icy stasis that exists on the surface. Pluto maintains a yearly margin of 11 degrees C between -223C (the highest temperature) and -233C (the lowest temperature) (Redd). However, when Pluto is closest to the sun in its elliptical orbit, it’s icy surface manages to sublimate a very small water vapor based atmosphere. Sublimation, or the ability of a solid to skip liquid phase and go directly to gas phase, allows for Pluto to maintain this atmosphere for just it's Summer (Redd).…

Pluto was first discovered in 1930 by Clyde W. Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff Arizona. Pluto is a very, very, very cold planet and is believed to be covered with ice. The temperature on Pluto is 375 - 400 degrees below zero, which is very cold compared to here on Earth. Pluto is so far away from Earth that scientists know very little about what the mysterious planet it is like. Pluto’s orbit is 5,913,520,000 km from the Sun.…

Global warming or climate change is the gradual increase of Earth’s temperature over time, through the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is the rising carbon level in the atmosphere, trapping radiation, and heating the Earth. Humans are depending on fossil fuels that release these emissions. Though we have increasingly started depending on renewable resources that don’t release these harmful gases into the atmosphere, we can already see the effects today and if this doesn’t stop now the planet will be destroyed. The human intervention that people have depended on with the environment is destroying the Earth.…
