The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, was written in 1925 but has been an American classic even today. But the question is why? What makes this book so relevant today? The problem is, people don’t think this novel should be taught in schools, and that it is too unrealistic and doesn’t teach the students anything.
When people think of The Great Gatsby, they imagine a lavish and unreachable lifestyle of the rich. The main character, Jay Gatsby, has a gigantic and beautiful mansion that houses never ending parties which never seem to run out of alcohol and only consists of the elite. Also, the Buchanans also have a classy gorgeous mansion that seems to be made out of money. Both places are set in one of the most expensive places to live in the United States, Long Island, New York.
For most people reading the book now, this lifestyle and these places are only seen in movies or in their dreams. It would take someone unbelieably rich, such as Jay Z, to live like Gatsby did. However, there are moments that many people can relate to. Such as, the heartbreak of the one you love being unattainable, affairs made by a significant other behind closed doors, fatal car crashes and murders, some accidents and some out of anger or revenge.
