Why Is The Count Of Monte Cristo Justified

In the classic novel The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexander Dumas, which is set in the early the early 1800’s Edmond Dantes, whose alias is the Count of Monte Cristo, is wrongly accused by his enemies of treason. Edmond Dantes is betrayed by four enemies who accuse him of treason, and he rightfully implements his vengeance. All of his enemies, Fernand, Danglars, Caderousse, and Villefort, deliberately betray Dantes in order to satisfy their own selfish greed, sending Dantes into a secret dungeon, dooming him to spend the rest of his years in a prison cell. However, with the cunning Abbe Faria’s assistance Dantes is able to escape and begin to carefully construct his vengeance in which is rightfully justified.

Fernand was deeply in love with Dantes fiance, Mercedes, but she always says “‘I love you like a brother, but never ask anything more of me because my heart belongs to someone else’”(9). Fernand would kill to be able to marry Mercedes and lets his jealousy drive his decisions. When Fernand is rejected by Mercedes in her hand in marriage again he is fuming when he meets up with Danglars and Caderousse. Who are also both jealous of Dantes because of his new found prosperity. With Caderousse encouraging them to plot against Dantes, Danglars comes up with a scheme to falsely denounce Dantes, “He’s probably going to Paris to deliver the letter the marshal gave him...By God! That letter gives me an idea, an excellent idea!”(14). Fernand’s believes that Mercedes would be better off with him and that he loves her therefore he should be able to marry her. He does not even considering Mercedes feelings. Dantes, unaware of the change in events after he escapes from jail, goes looking for Mercedes and his father. When he is in disguise as Abbe Busoni he discovers “Edmond’s father died, as I’ve told you. If he’d live, Mercedes might have never married another man.”(90) Fernand knew that Dantes's father would “reproach her with her unfaithfulness”.(90) He waited until his father died and came back deceiving Mercedes into feeling like she love him in her time of weakness and mourning. After “eighteen months in all,”(90) Mercedes agreed to marry Fernand which infuriated Dantes because his fiance agreed to marry one of the men that falsely denounced him. Abbe Busoni, also known as Dantes, found out about a son Fernand and Mercedes have named Albert.Using his other alias, The Count of Monte Cristo, he set up Albert during the festival to be capture by Luigi Vampa.
