Arch of Constantine The Arch of Constantine is a unique part of Ancient Rome for various different reasons. ItThe Arch of Constantine was built for an important reason, the building has an interesting design, and many more features make the building interesting. Flesh out your intro. To start off, the Arch of Constantine was built in honor of Constantine I. Three years after Constantine I defeated Emperor Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312 AD, the senate built the Arch of Constantine for Constantine I. Although it was built by the senate, it was most likely that Constantine I actually paid for the building. The building went up in 315 AD. The Arch was built between the Roman Colosseum and the Roman Forum. TAnother fact is, the arch was built from colored marble. Older monuments were made with only white marble or travertine, so this was a new type of building material. The Arch of Constantine stands 69 feet high and is about 85 feet wide. There is one large arch in the middle and two smaller arches on each of the sides, making it a triple arch. There are parts of Constantine I’s arch that were not taken from previous buildings, which were comparatively lower quality than the rest of the arch. They were recycled and used to send a message about Constantine I being a leader. These reflected older military victories. In addition, there are Corinthian columns which showed some architecture developed in Ancient Greece. Above the columns are many freestanding sculptures of soldiers. They came from the Forum of Emperor Trajan. Constantines own soldiers are located on the bottom of the arch representing his victory over Maxentius. Many different reliefs were added from other military leaders monuments to the Arch of Constantine to show his successes and victories as a military
