Tattoos and Piercings in the Workplace Tattoos are becoming more popular in today’s society. Tattoos originated with Egyptians back in 3500 B.C. Then it was discovered the Japanese started them for cosmetics and religious reasons. They even branded criminals as a part of their punishment. Tattoos were done by hand, but in 1981 the first tattoo gun was issued. Recently in the society tattoos have become more popular as a way to express themselves and or their religious beliefs. Ear piercings were one of the first common piercings and is still very common today. Septum piercings come from tribal, and was also a way to make the men look fierce. Tongue piercings was a way of blood sacrifice. People seem to say tattoos and piercings, along with dyed hair, is affecting the workplace. (Lazzara 2017) Tattoos and piercings should not affect the way you are working. While working in the medical field, law enforcement, school teachers and also a few other jobs I am aware that tattoos, piercings are frowned upon. I think it shouldn’t be though, because it is a way of expressing yourself along with your uniqueness and also making you different from others. Horns, implants, tongue splitting, and a few other extreme things are considered modifications. Allowing piercings doesn't mean they allow modifications. First, body modifications are an alteration done to the human body, such as breast implants, liposuction, and hair transplant along with plastic surgery are considered body modifications. When deciding if modifications are beautiful, it can be a down slope. Secondly, there are a lot of modifications but not all is equal.
