IIn the early 1980’s at a High School in New Jersey, two girls were found smoking in the bathroom, which violated school rules. The girls were found by a teacher and brought to the office, where they were questioned by the Assistant Vice Principal, Theodore Choplick. One of the girls admitted to Choplick that she nevertheless, been smoking in the bathroom. T.L.O, a 14-year-old freshman girl, claimed she wasn’t smoking in the bathroom and had never smoked a day in her life.
Choplick figured T.L.O was being mendacious, so he demanded she gives him her purse. When T.L.O refused to hand over the purse, Choplick forcibly took the purse into his possession. In the purse, he found a pack of cigarettes, held them up for T.L.O to see, and stated that
