In today’s world, more and more businesses are developing new methods of sustainability in the day-to-day operations of an organization. It has been demonstrated that mankind has and will continue to have a great bearing on the overall health of our world. This spans from air and water pollution to the inevitability of the depletion of our natural resources. If we are to thrive and exist now and in the distant future, it is necessary that mankind takes the initiative and change the behavior on all levels. When an organization answers to the request for clear methods to maintain the environment, they are recognized as being more appealing to the new category of ethical investors, and recover the expenses of running a more sustainable organization “through government grants and increased sales to green activists and other members of the community” (Why Sustainability is Important to Your Business, 2014). Adopting and implementing this type of attitude and behavior in the business world also can contribute to the increased success of an organization. Furthermore, when an organization practices ethical business customs, it is possible for them to become more competitive among other businesses, fostering growth within the market and of course, larger profits for the business. Additionally, other reason for businesses becoming so interested in the environment is that these respectable business practices are sought out by investors. Some financiers look for a worthy project, therefore, placing emphasis on protecting and preserving the environment can bring them in. Sustainable initiatives are a significant component in the corporate world today; however, when employees are not involved or informed, it can be extremely difficult to accomplish environmental initiatives. There is the need for an internal communications program to educate employees, by provided an overview of an organizations plans and efforts and initiatives to succeed. This can be accomplished by employees understanding the efforts put forth by the organization and offering them the chance to make suggestions to enhance the strategy. In addition, keeping employees informed empowers them to be involved in discussions and planning in aspects from recycling in the workplace to government guidelines and principles. Safety and environmental regulations, the ever-increasing cost of insurance, and remediation costs, product liability, consumer boycotts and brand erosion have cost many respected corporations billions of dollars in recent years (Aguiriano, How to Build a Productive, Profitable and Sustainable Organization, 2010). The public wants to do business with companies who care about the environment and openly share their plans with the public as well as employees as to their intentions; they want to see an organization involved in the community and making an intensive effort.
