Why Is Summer Reading Important To Me

Improved Essays
Each year, the students of my middle school dreaded only one thing about summer: “summer reading”. Not only were the required books notoriously dull, they were also difficult to relate to as a twelve-year-old with problems typical of adolescents. As an avid reader, this disappointed me. I had no issue with the written assignments about the reading that needed to be completed, but each year I was left wishing the book had been more interesting. When I was in seventh grade, this dry spell was broken for the grade above me. My mother’s best friend had twin daughters in eighth grade. During one of the weekly breakfast dates between my mother and her friend, the woman could not stop raving about the summer reading book her daughters had been completing, …show more content…
What was once a magical place to him in his young adulthood has slowly turned him into an outwardly unfriendly man, who is essential to the operation of Ruby Pier due to his extensive knowledge of each attraction. The novel takes a dramatic turn very early on in the plot, when a free-fall ride’s cable snaps and is about to drop from several feet up straight down onto the pier. Eddie is controlling the horrified crowd when he notices a young girl sitting directly under the falling cart. He runs to push her out of the way, and he is struck and killed. Eddie then goes to heaven, and one by one he meets the five people who his life affected the most. Incredibly, some of the people who Eddie affected the most are people who he had never even met before. This had an immediate impact on me, causing me to stop reading for a few minutes solely to think about the fact that my life might impact many more people than I think. This made me think about the value of every human life, and that if it would be possible to have a list of every person that our lives affect in some way; the results would most likely be

Every year at Laurel Christian School, we are given a Summer Reading Assignment. The summer assignment consist of several rules, such as reading an assigned book given by your instructor, and keeping a journal of your reading in a standard size spiral bound notebook. In this case the notebook plays a very important role. For each chapter summary, you are required to title the page, give a plot summary, and write a personal analysis of the chapter. It may sound boring or lame but it is very helpful in several ways, simply because over the summer, students are too busy traveling, sleeping late, and having great time and afterwards forgetting everything about education.…

American teenagers loathe according to Prose because, the reading they are assigned is mediocre, teachers encourage students to see themselves in the books rather than really understand what is being said, some teachers have methods that “narrow the world of experience down to personal” (paragraph 40), this prohibits students from understanding the book as a whole and teaching literature just for values or character makes it much more boring for the student. 10. During the summer, I devour the books that I didn't have time to read during the school year. I'm hungry for the kind of "can't-put-it-down-stay-up-all-night" experience I so cherished as a child. I found that three times this summer: In "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr, "Helter Skelter" by Vincent Bugliosi, and "Go Set a Watchman", Harper Lee's eagerly awaited second (but maybe first) novel about Scout all grown up. The first, "All the Light I Cannot See", I slurped up in three night's, after waiting for much of the summer on the library's waiting list.…

Autumn my favorite time of the year, right before the bitter cold comes that makes you want to curl up in a blanket with a cup of coffee and read a book. That is what most people think about when they want to read a book, they want to have a Hallmark movie moment, but that is not what it’s like for me.…

Looking at that calendar and studying the plethora of those detestable squares I was almost brought to tears. “44 more days?” I thought to myself, “God please kill me, I’ll never escape this insufferable ‘H-E- Double Hockey Stick’ that is the fourth grade.” That ambiguous prospect that has been the subject of every child’s dream since the onset of humanity, summer break, was but a distant shimmer of hope, miles down the long, desperate dark tunnel which is public education. For all practical purposes it was nearly nonexistent, unreachable, an allusion designed to keep squirmy children motivated through their cursive practices.…

As a student, I have always asked myself the same question in every grade, “Why does my English suck?” In school, I was the student that would just get by with C’s and barely grasp the concepts that I’ve been taught. I could not understand why I wasn’t good in English, but it was my first language. Then I realized that I wasn’t great in English because I disliked reading, and that was one significant way of learning it. Eventually, I found myself in a classroom full of students who can barely speak and write English and I felt bitter.…

Every high school student often looks forward to summer vacation, but are not too eager of completing their English 10 Pre-AP required reading. Many find the choice of texts as monotonous, which is why the English department should choose books students will enjoy reading in the summer months. Two novels that the English department should include in their list of required reading are the two novels I read for my summer reading assignment The Grapes of Wrath and 1984 because of their important life lessons, uniqueness, and the connections students can make. These two novels provide exceptional life lessons that several students can learn and that I personally learned as well. For instance, The Grapes of Wrath serves as an explicit example of how man will…
