Beginning a life in either Athens or Sparta have pros and cons. Athenians enjoyed luxuries and foods from all over their empire, but did not have equal freedom. In Sparta there was freedom for both genders, but there was bad food and children were abused. There are many reasons why one could be better than the other. If you choose to live in Sparta, you will have more freedom. If you choose to live in Athens, you live a more luxurious life. Which one is the best? After deciding carefully, I chose Athens was the better place to live. Here is why.

A Spartan father had no right to decide whether to rear his newly born son or not. Newborn babies that were strong and healthy were kept, but ones that weren’t were killed. Babies were even thrown off of cliffs because they were simply “unfit” to be a Spartan warrior. Doing this to babies is a harsh tradition that the Spartans had done. The healthy Spartan boys are nurtured by his parents only until he is seven years old. When he turns eight, he is removed from his family. In Sparta, boys were even encouraged to steal food, but if they were caught stealing, they were flogged and were severely whipped until they fainted. It is clear to see that Spartan boys, even babies, were treated very unfairly. Babies cannot control if they are healthy or not when they are just born. However, in Athens, babies are not killed if they are unhealthy. All Athenian babies were accepted. In Sparta, the babies were selected by health and strength. Referring back to Document B, the Old Oligarch stated people should all be treated equally and they all deserve a chance, healthy or unhealthy. Whether it’s to vote, share ideas, or anything else, every man will have a chance to do so in Athens- but not in
