Social Media and Its Effect on Society Social media is always on the rise. Jeff Bullas stated in a recent article, “72% of all internet users are now active on social media.” This goes to show that more than half of internet users are sharing their information whether it is private or not. Social media has a great effect on how people around the world share and get their information. People fail to recognize that all information in which they share is processed and saved by the individual owners of each social media site. Similar to The Circle, large social media businesses are shifting societal norms by openhandedly giving people a sense of power, corrupting people’s social lives, and eliminating people’s privacy. Often times a person feels of less value, and social media allows them to become of greater value by posing as someone their not through different social media sites. This shows how people can say anything that they want online but when push comes to shove in person, they are different. Online in social media no one really speaks about their problems because then they are viewed as weak. Just like the online advertisements that single you out based on what you’ve liked. These websites know more about you than your real life friends and families do. Just based off simple interests, websites generate ways to find out what you want to buy, watch, or even sell. Thus, Annie volunteers to be a test subject for the Circle’s new invention, PastPerfect, because she has grown resentful of Mae’s growing success. When the invention looks into her families past, it is made known that her ancestors were slave owners and her parent’s watched someone die and provided them with no help.
