“Smoking is hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain, and dangerous to the lungs,” (King James I). For centuries, humans have created an addiction to the small, “silent” killers called cigarettes. While some may argue that smoking acts as a stress reliever, scientific evidence demonstrates that smoking is actually harmful to the smoker and others surrounding him. The FDA must be stricter with smoking laws in restaurants and public places because it is harmful for those surrounding the smoker, it creates an unsanitary environment, and it ultimately affects the ability of the smoker to interact with others. First of all, smoking is an act that not only hurts the individual who’s doing it, but it is also extremely harmful to those around him.

Imagine a married couple and their 7-year old son walk into a restaurant to enjoy a meal on a Sunday afternoon. They are delighted by nice tables and customer service, yet they can’t enjoy their food because the seats are filled with ashes and left over cigarettes. Many locations in the United States are suffering from unsanitary conditions including parks, agencies, and bars, among others. Others say that cigarettes have never harmed anyone around them, and the course previously cited says “you are likely to find many studies stating that conventional foods are healthy for you and that the pesticides, fertilizers, and GMO’s used to make your food will not affect your health negatively.” While they are referring to food, the exact concept applies for tobacco. The fact that there is no visible physical damage at first does not mean that the health of smokers and second-hand smokers won’t suffer over the years. Perhaps the most used excuse by smokers themselves is that they can’t stop or control their “need”.
