Imagine this, a child in line for food at school. He's waiting and waiting. This child had no breakfast and is very hungry. Once he goes up to line he remembers what his parents told him. “You need to eat very healthy because you have a big soccer game today.” So this child looks for a salad, water, chicken, and rice. But once he looks at the “yummy” meals, instead of seeing his food ideas, the healthiest food he can find is pizza, chocolate milk, and fries. Well, this is not any kind, it's how kids feel every day at lunch, wanting to eat healthy, hungry for a nice salad, but all they can find is chicken nuggets that taste worse than Mcdonalds. A reason for sickness could be that, according to mamavation.com, “Food allergies among children are increasing.” And then according to FoodAllergy.org, they affect 1 in every 13 children. Milk, soy, nuts, eggs, and gluten are common allergens that can be found foods you wouldn’t likely suspect. Children could mistakenly eat something they are allergic to and could have an allergic reaction or even death.” Another reason for sickness from school lunches is the unhealthy foods served at schools is a big factor to childhood obesity(10 Reasons to Avoid School Lunches like the Plague). Which could end up leading to much more extreme illnesses, such as a heart attack? They are just growing and learning new things every day, but if anything is affecting their health they need to be taken care of. For example, the meat made at some schools would be turned down by fast food places. This is extremely dangerous for kids because you need to eat meat to grow, but eating the meat in the school lunches, could make you very ill, and possibly lead to death. Also according to mamavation.com, “School lunches are made with conventional food, meaning no certified organic ingredients are used.” Which is bizarre. But while all of this is happening some schools are trying to fix this problem. In the same article, it states, “People are trying to make school lunches better, but now the food they are serving has fewer calories, fat, and more.” This is bad because kids won’t get enough healthy food in their bodies. Another reason isn’t about the lunch food, but about the kids. Many kids are still not eating healthy at school. Their lunch money is, instead of being spent in vending machines on sweets and snacks. This is also bad because now kids are not “eating healthy foods at school”, but instead snacks and desserts. Next, we have a big one that could really affect children which is artificial flavors.
