The Roman Empire fell but the styles, architecture and designs that the Romans used are still used today and incorporated in many of the monuments and wonders of the world today. Without a doubt, Roman art, Roman architecture and engineering, Roman language and writing, Roman law, citizenship, and philosophy are still used today and in many parts of the world. But out of all these Roman legacies, I think Roman architecture and engineering has had greatest impact on today's society because of aqueducts, building styles and materials and roads the …show more content…
Surprisingly, people today in some towns still use aqueducts as a resource for running water, like the people in Segovia, Spain. The influence of arches in aqueducts has influenced many buildings today in many parts of the world, such as Europe, west Asia, and Northern Africa. Water systems back in the time was a new standard of living; it improved the quality of life! This provided Romans with fresh drinking water, water for irrigation, sewage systems and indoor plumbing. The Romans created a system that brought water from about 60 miles away to the homes of the city's wealthiest citizens, as well as to its public baths and fountains. The slope of the aqueducts had to remain gradual from mountain springs all the way to the cities so that the water would reach steadily. They also built them in the driest parts of the empire. Additionally, the aqueducts allowed people to live longer. The population grew over 1 million plus. This allowed people to bathe everyday, stay clean and healthy, and keep personal hygiene. Rome was the cleanest of all of Europe, and the other Europeans wanted to be a Roman (they were jealous). Based off of the original Roman aqueducts, we have advanced water systems today. Water is a necessity in our daily lives and without aqueducts, we would be somewhere else right now, probably with no running water at …show more content…
More than 50,000 miles of road connected Rome. They thought straight roads were the best way to go, and they didn't really know how to make a "turn" with the roads. The Romans built their roads with layers of stone, sand and gravel. Their techniques set the standard of road building for 2000 years. They dug a foundation, used boulders and sand first, then covered that with mortar and gravel and lastly, put down large, flat stones. Roads were crowned (higher in the middle) to allow water to drain off. Roads were originally built to transport troops and for trade. The Romans needed an efficient way to get troops from place to place. Marching/horseback through the countryside was much more time consuming because of the low quality dirt roads. Roads were also used to keep enemies aware that the Romans could get to them quickly, if they really needed to. In the same way, Roman roads were used to get to places faster with easy transportation. With roads today, we can go to places much more faster and easier than ever before. There are intersections, traffic lights, and signs on the roads to make it easier for people to transport to places easily, thanks to the Roman roads. Following this further, we now have a chance to meet new people and share new ideas. Roads have provided a better way of communication and more interacting with others (social contact). Cars in some parts of Europe still drive in freeways
