Richard Milhous Nixon was born on January 9, 1913 in Yorba Linda, California and attended Whittier College then Duke University School of Law before joining a law firm in his hometown. He first started in the House of Representatives in 1946 then moved on to being Vice President for eight years for President Eisenhower (Richard-Foundation), but we all know him as the 37th president of the United States serving from 1969 to 1974. He first ran for president in 1960, but lost to John F. Kennedy by approximately 100,000 votes.
Nixon brought an end to the Vietnam War and improved international relations with the Soviet Union and China, but he’s best known for being the only president to resign from office after the Watergate scandal where several burglars were arrested inside the office of the …show more content…
Nixon also created the Environmental Protection Agency organization in hope to address the pollution problem as well as the Department of Natural Resources where he oversaw the Clean Air and Clean Water Act. He also ended the draft in addition to making advances towards women’s rights when he signed the law requiring girl’s sports teams received the same amount of funds as the boys’ teams in 1972 (Parnass). Nixon also gave $100 million to begin the War on Cancer in hopes to find a cure and deplete the cancer death rates. As if all those achievements weren’t good enough, the “Nixon shock” managed to take $17 billion off the deficit in three years as well as granting a guaranteed income and healthcare.
