Quality Time: Family and Technology Difficult to Avoid in the United States The bell rings at school on a Friday afternoon and Emma is heading home while listening to her favorite boy band on her iPod. At the same time, her mother and father are heading home from work talking to each other through their hands free headsets. Mother agrees to get dinner at their favorite restaurant while father is going to order a movie online. Once they get home and each get their dinner and the movie starts playing each of them start to wonder to their own gadgets while eating and watching the movie. Internet was introduced at school and children became dependent on it for their studies. As a result, this dependency was brought home and increased within the years and parents followed. However, there was a digital gap that separated the family, “The gap between people who have access to computers and those who do not…” (Berger 459). In addition, there was a period in time where technology alienated the contemporary family at a greater extent due to the family’s individual knowledge of technology. Over the years, not only did students grew a dependency towards technology, but their parents and grandparents followed. This technology was brought to the home and completely changed the contemporary family structure. With that being said, many people who stayed behind in the digital gap feel that their family members have become very different from them in their values, and traditions. A research on this topic in the United States shows how technology, specifically, social network can influence attitude, behavior, and social norms (Young).
