Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…
How did we choose our topic? We chose our topic through determining who are some of the most influential people in American history, this was decided by thinking who made a major difference that changed how our lives are lived today. Derek and I chose Jackie Robinson as our influential person for the base for our project because both of us are very involved and interested in sports, and share mutual participation in baseball. Jackie Robinson is a good fit for our project because he broke the color barrier in professional baseball, which if he had not done so, Major League Baseball as we know it would be drastically different. 2.…

In a time when women had little to no rights and were paid way less than men. It was very difficult for women to have a say in politics because they were also not allowed vote. Susan B. There have been many important people who have impacted the United States in a monumental way throughout history. Each person who was considered to be the most influential in history has benefitted the United States differently. Out of each person’s actions throughout time, I believe the person who has had the biggest impact on this country was Elizabeth Cady Stanton. I believe she influenced this country the most through her incredible efforts of supporting and leading the first women’s rights movement from the start (Davis 1). To begin, Stanton’s influence and interest in women’s rights began when she attended the World’s Anti-Slavery Convention in London in 1840.…
Do you consider Rosa Parks bold action to be worth it? I believe that bold actions are worth the risk. People can affect many lives by taking bold actions. Rosa Parks for example, refused to give up her bus seat which caused the bus boycott, and that helped pass the civil rights act. If Rosa Parks had not done this then the civil rights act would have been delayed many years.…

She begins by telling a story of her childhood; when she was ten years old, she watched Sidney Poitier become the first African American man to win an Oscar. She recalls herself watching from a TV at home, in the ‘cheap seats’, while her mother rested after cleaning houses all day. Oprah aligns herself with the audience at home by reminding them that she was in their position once, too. By garnering the audience’s sympathy in the beginning of the speech, Oprah ensures that she will keep their attention for the important statements that follow. The award itself also shows ethos.…
The main goal for Oprah’s show was to inform her viewers of what is going on in the world. Oprah had a show that had millions of viewers everyday, she knew she had a outlet to reach out to the public and that’s exactly what she did. Oprah provided them with information and made them aware of what was going on in the world. This had a lasting affect of the people’s lives who watched.…
