Is music the key to psychological well-being? For ages, humanity has listened to music as the melodic plucking of string instruments and the rhythmic beats of the drum. Music has helped create culture and inspired masses across the globe. Today, researchers are finding out new details how music can improve the lives of billions. However, many perceive music to be only an amusement, not for medicinal purposes. Although music often is dismissed as pleasure, it should be considered as a therapeutic tool because of its various positive contributions towards a person’s well-being. As the prominent psychologist Martin Seligman briefly puts it, “PERMA is the ingredients to happiness.” PERMA consists of: (1) positive emotions; (2) engagement; (3) …show more content…
Hylton also found that “the self-esteem that results from musical accomplishment may contribute greatly to an individual’s sense of well-being resulting in feelings of accomplishment, success, and pride” (Croom 57). In other words, people often feel better about themselves after finishing a certain goal. It is important because it reveals that self-esteem from a musical accomplishment can influence happiness and feelings of accomplishment as well. In conclusion, music can positively influence well-being because of the self-esteem that results from musical accomplishments. What is the importance of music and well-being? Well, given the evidence from the various experts, music could significantly improve a person’s well-being. This is because music has characteristics of PERMA such as positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and purpose, and accomplishments. All of these ingredients consist of positive well-being and music reinforces these aspects. The implications could be that therapists could use these musical techniques to assist people who struggle with positive well-being.
